STRESS TO SUCCESS IN 28 Days - Hansa Pankhania

    INTRODUCTION

Do you want to boost your wellbeing, prevent stress and enjoy an energetic, enriching life at home and at work?

Wellbeing is the opposite of being in a stressed state. When you are stressed, your body, mind and soul are impacted by this negative energy which affects your physical and mental health.

Often this stress creeps up on you bit by bit over the course of months or years. Your body, mind and soul send you the signals that everything is not well but either you have no time to listen or simply ignore when minor symptoms begin to surface. Sometimes the signals are loud and clear; sleep problems, irritability, health issues, decrease in efficiency at work amongst many more but you do not know what to do about it. You believe this is not a priority because of a hectic work and/or family schedule.

How do we turn this around, so your wellbeing is your number one priority? Remember that if you are not on top form with optimum wellbeing then the care you give to your work role or family and friends will be compromised and not the best. Just as in an airplane emergency, you are advised to put the oxygen mask on yourself first and then help others. The concept of wellbeing and stress prevention is the same. You have to take care of yourself first before giving your best to others whether you are an individual, employee, manager or chief executive officer of a global company.

This book takes you on a journey where you will find the time to prevent stress and all the consequences associated with that state. I have devised a structured 28-day programme that will help you optimise your wellbeing so that you are bursting with energy, creativity and happiness.

As you integrate these simple natural techniques into your daily life, this programme will help you:

Find time and space for your wellbeing despite having a busy routine

Propel resilience and a sense of relaxation

Learn cost free, natural coping techniques

Integrate practical, easy wellbeing exercises to do in the office or at home

    Accelerate concentration and focus

    Boost creativity and productivity

    Enrich communication and relationships

    Sustain healthy work life boundaries

The tools in this book can be used during everyday activities and throughout your lifetime to maintain a calm, productive, fulfilling and meaningful life.

The tools have a dual purpose. The first is prevention. A regular practice of a combination of these techniques will boost your resilience threshold, lower your stress levels and propel your health and wellbeing. The second is to help you to manage and overcome current situations that are causing you anxiety and worry.

The first week of the programme we will focus on the breath, the second week on the body, the third week on the mind and the fourth on your relationships with others. Although we are going to focus on each of these areas separately, they are all interrelated.

In this book you’ll find a variety of techniques from those that you can do standing up to sitting and lying down. There are even exercises for when you are stuck in traffic and others that you can do whilst you are walking.

We are all human and that means life will be stressful from time to time. The stress could be anything from being stuck in a traffic jam to a pathological state where you are not able to get out of bed for days to face your daily life.

It starts with CEOs and managers, trickling its way into boardrooms, conference rooms, meeting rooms, offices, homes, schools, shops and the streets. Nobody is immune and even the most resilient people have their moments with it. In the more extreme cases, stress is pretty much all that is known.

You may have already wondered what impact stress is having on your daily life? Perhaps you have delved a little deeper and wondered how it is affecting your health and wellbeing? You may have read from time to time that stress is one of our biggest killers. If you are like most people, perhaps you don’t link this fact to the way you are doing things in your everyday life. As a self-reliant and independent person, you may have found yourself wondering if there is anything you can do to live even more resourcefully.

As a matter of fact, there is something you can do and this 28-day Programme will enlighten you as to what that is.

There is a way of not only preventing stress but of living far beyond it so that you are bursting with energy and happiness. There is a way of excelling at work, home and life in general, without being governed by external pressures. Instead of feeling like your outside world has a hold on you and is constantly triggering reactions from within, you can learn to strengthen your inner resources and respond with resilience and confidence.

The type of stress prevention and optimum wellbeing that I am describing does not involve exercising or going to the gym. There is a myth that a gym membership will resolve all your physical and mental wellbeing issues. Yes, exercise helps and has many other health benefits but the reality is that if you are operating in a high-performance working or non-work environment, chances are you do not have time to go to the gym as often as you need to in order to consistently maintain your wellbeing levels.

Life is not straightforward, it has many twists, turns and challenges on a personal and professional level hence there will be times when we as humans experience stress. That is a given. You may experience the immediate impact of something when it does not go as expected or you could feel the impact of the accumulation of negative energy in the form of stress over many years. The build-up can be deeply rooted, even starting in childhood.

It is like a bottle inside you filling up with layers of stress over many years which, if not emptied out, can trigger unhelpful feelings and reactions causing physical and mental illness. I call this the stress pot, which festers and bubbles away inside, unless we empty it out and fill it with positive creative energy.

Hence, it is not about never feeling stressed, rather how we come out of that state in the shortest possible time, using interventions which have no other negative consequences. There are other common practices, many of which have undesirable implications such as using alcohol. The techniques presented in this 28-day Programme do not have any negative consequences. They do not cost anything and will not require you to take much time out; yet they are a quick fix to the stress you are experiencing. In addition, you can use them in short, sharp bursts to propel peace of mind as well as productivity.

Stress can be a short sharp burst or deep rooted.

The stress response starts in your mind with your thinking and accumulates in your body. Most of the people I coach have lost track of the number of times they have heard that stress starts in their mind and that if they change the way their mind reacts, the stress will go away. We hear this time and time again, but most of us do not actually know how to stop the mind from reacting. The mind triggers a chemical response in the body, which triggers negative feelings and then you are riding that feeling like a wave. Soon, it feels as if you have lost control.

You may have wondered why, despite your best intentions, you have found that others trigger you at certain times. The key to understanding why we get triggered by someone else lies in our past.

Our experiences have shaped us into who we are today. If some of them were negative and especially if they haven’t been dealt with, they can become baggage that we carry around with us. From our life experiences we construct our beliefs about life and they create filters
