    Chapter 1

She was a beautiful Spanish girl at the age of 16. She looked at her reflection in the mirror. Then she went outside to sit under the tree, looking out at the ocean. The priest came over and sat down beside her. Then they saw a clipper ship coming around the bend. It docked on the beach and her father, the fort commander, and his men came to greet them. She stood on the hill with the wind blowing and the captain of the ship looked into her eyes.

That night at dinner, the young dashing Russian captain of the ship told them they were from up north and were looking to trade furs for supplies. They were on their way back to Russia. Even while he was talking, he kept his eyes on her making her blush and turn away. Her father was gracious and told them they could have the supplies.

They stayed there over a time that allowed them to meet secretly in the flower field behind the fort. They were in love and he asked her to marry him. When he asked the father, the father said no but if he could get the permission, then he would grant it to.

When did the ruler of Russia get such power that it has today----the power to decide if we are to wed or not? She asked him as he explained what he planned to do under the large oak tree in the moonlight.

They bid farewell and she watched the ship sail away around the bend.

Each day she would come out and look for the ship but the days, then months and finally years went by. She became a nun and one day an old sailor told her what happened. The tras has said yes to him to wed but his adviser was jealous of him and sent pirates to shut down the ship and get the treasures that the tras had given him. But just at the time the battle was going on, a storm came and all the ships went down in the ocean. This sailor was the only one to survive it and he guessed it was because he was meant to tell her the story.

She vowed to someday be with him again.

He escaped and was now free. His so called friend had gotten out before him and he knew he would be going to get the treasures. Why did he even tell him about it?

He had accidentally let it slip off where the treasures might be. He had almost got away with the stolen treasure from the museum when they got him before he got on the boat to an island. He had always been fascinated with the jewels and coins and ships.

But they didn’t find anything on but he had dropped a coin. He never told where the treasure was so that one day, he could come back and get it. They would never guess where it was his secret until he slipped one day in talking to his so called friend in prison. He had to get to the treasures before he did, or all this would be in vain.

The train pulled off, leaving a man standing on the platform. He slipped his hands into the pockets of his perfectly tailored slacks and looked around for a taxi. The taxi pulled into the hotel and he hopped out. The desk clerk was a black man middle forties with a round face, hair pulled back in a ponytail, broad shoulders and quick eyes.

After taking his things to the cheerless room full of ponderous Victorian furniture, he left the hotel and walked down the street to the address he had of the sheriff’s office.

The sheriff was behind her desk checking the morning reports. She didn’t look up when she heard the door open and the footsteps approaching her.

    Are you Sheriff Molten?

She turned around and looked into his steel grey eyes.

Yes, how can I help you?

Well, I would like to speak to the sheriff—if he’s out, I can hang around until he gets back.

He showed her his bangle and handed her his card at the same time. I’m with the FBI and we just had a prison break and we believe he is headed this way.

    I see.

    I’m the sheriff.

You are? Sorry if I seem surprised. It is just rare to find a woman, a sheriff of a town.

I know. You are not the first one to be surprised.

If I had done things differently, things would be different now. Every act we commit, trivial or important, has inevitable consequences, which is why I became a sheriff. Maybe if more people knew about the law of cause and effect, they wouldn’t be so quick to commit crimes.

Sat down and have some coffee.

She went over and poured him some coffee from the electric plate with the percolated on it and poured the coffee into a mug. She brought the coffee mug over to him. She placed the sugar and cream next to it. He picked it and took a sip.

She put a bag of nacho cheese chips on the table, offering it to him. No wedding ring, he noted to himself.

    No thanks.
