About this ebook

It's Friday night, and hardworking cowboys and ranchers from all around Fort Worth come to The Lone Star for a cold brew and someone warm to dance with. Lucky for them, one table is always reserved for Bailey Rose and her friends, who come there to unwind and maybe to get wound up by a good-looking guy with a big smile and a bigger rodeo buckle.

My life as a lawyer leaves little time for a personal life. I divide what time I have between two places, the ranch where I board my horse, Pollack, and the Lone Star Honky-Tonk because I can ogle Troy Campbell both places. Troy is a well-respected horse trainer, and I won't lie, I'd let him train me anytime, anywhere. ~ Caroline

IT’S ANOTHER GIRLS’ Night Out at The Lone Star, and once again I’m dateless. Technically, we all are, except for the three sitting at the far end of the long table we created out of several four-tops pushed together so we could all be close enough to see the band. Barbed Wire is back tonight after a long absence. Rumor has it they’ve been recording an album in Nashville for the last few months. They always draw a big crowd, and tonight is no exception. I think every single female in Ft. Worth is here. Most are wearing shit I wouldn’t be caught dead in, but will happily sell to them. That’s what I do. I run the ladies’ wear department at the western wear store my family has owned and operated for four generations. By run it, I mean I order the merchandise and manage the hired help. I’d work the floor, but I can’t bring myself to tell a woman she looks good wearing fringe. Nope. I draw the line there.

Anyway, it looks like most of our usual group are here, dateless, as is the custom. This is a no-men-allowed table. Travis, Colton, and Brendan aren’t far, though. Probably at the table behind us, but I refuse to turn and look. As much as I hate fringe, I love a man in tight jeans, boots, and a western shirt. Cowboys and ranchers are a possessive lot, thus the reason I know those three are nearby. They’d never let their women out of their sight in a place like this. Until a few weeks ago, Nick Watts would have been with them, keeping an eye on me, but that was before slow-moving Nick grew a pair—of wings I mean—and up and flew off to Vegas to marry some hussy he met at a cattle auction, leaving me single once again. His mom damn near had a coronary, as did I. After I got over the shock and the hangover from drowning my sorrows one shot of tequila at a time, I realized Nick’s new appendages were a good thing. We’d dated for six months and had only been intimate for the last three.

That was partly my fault. Well, maybe it was all my fault. I can move as slow as a glacier when I want to, and to hear Nick tell it, I’m as cold as one, too. So, in retrospect, those wings saved his life. I own a gun, and I know how to use it. Cold? How dare that ball-less wonder call me cold? He just didn’t know how to light my fire. That’s my story, and I’m sticking to it.

I look around for our waitress and catch sight of a commotion at the other end of the table. Beth signs a poster for some kid who doesn’t look like he’s old enough to ride a Shetland pony, much less a bronc. After high school, Beth got out of Ft. Worth briefly, but her professional cheerleading days ended abruptly when a gun safe on two legs ran out of bounds and crushed her foot. She came home and opened a dance/cheer studio that limped along on one good foot for a couple of years. Then Colton Barnes asked her
