About this ebook

We've always been persecuted. That was what my grandma used to tell me.

They murdered my family and were now looking for me.

On the run, I fell into a magical hole in the ground that brought me to a world full of monsters.

I'm still not sure how I found myself mated to one of them.

In order to survive a ceremony called The Devouring, I'm going to have to trust him.

Covered in blood, will this warrior who saved me from death be able to save me from himself?

    Chapter 1

    Jasleen

We’ve always been persecuted. That was what my grandma used to tell me.

The branches of the trees whip my face as I move my legs faster and faster. My skirt catches, but I jerk it away, ripping the fabric. The acrid smell of smoke burns my lungs with every breath. They sound so close, I need to get away! The pain on my cheek numbs quickly from the adrenaline rush I feel through me.

    Get back here, Gypsy!

Yeah! We just wanted to have a little fun!

Their cackling laugh sends a bolt of fear through my body. They came to our camp, pretending to want trade. Suddenly, screams and gunshots rang out. It all happened so fast. Uncle Fenix tried to fight them off, but there were too many of them and not enough of us.

The sound of my mother’s gurgles echo in my mind. Her eyes rolled back quickly as her top bloomed with crimson bloodstains. She sacrificed her life for mine.

They lit the whole camp on fire. Our whole lives—our whole culture—up in flames, erased from existence as if we never existed.

    I’m so sorry, mother!

I leap over the fallen logs and boulders that surround the area, almost missing my footing on the last one. My foot catches on a root I didn’t see, and I tumble onto my knees. The leaves beneath my feet soften the fall at least but prick my skin, nonetheless.

She couldn’t have gotten that far.

    What about the others?

The boys will take care of it. We just need to get this one. I’ve never been with a Romani girl before.

You best watch out—she might curse you, make your prick fall off.

He laughs. You’ve been watching too many movies. They’re just nomadic Gypsy scum, squatting wherever, petty thieves and crooks. Nothing more.

Their voices float between the trees. I can’t tell the direction except behind me. I hate this world. I hate the people in it. If my mother hadn’t made such a great sacrifice for me, I would have let them just take me away from this place.

Now, I don’t even know if
