    Ionce had a boss in the travel industry who liked to say: Travel is a metaphor for life.

    This is so true. We are all on a journey. Some of us think we know where we're headed. Some of us know to expect the unexpected. Even those of us with a complete itinerary can find ourselves turned around by God's plans for us.

    I spent more than a quarter of a century helping people (in the physical sense) with their journeys at American Airlines, Travelocity, Sabre, and later at the division of General Electric that makes aircraft engines. For me, it was about making the experience better, giving people more chances to get there, and promoting the wonders of travel after 9/11 when few wanted to journey about.

    It was business, of course; but my boss and his metaphor-for-life idea, plus a colleague named Liz, reminded me that travel was more than business. These are people. Travel makes
