    Chapter 1

    Introduction

You have a friend named Bill who is an entrepreneur, and John, who is also a friend, works for him. Both Bill and John have been mentored by you personally, but a disagreement has arisen between them, leading John to quit his job. After meeting with John, you are convinced that it would be beneficial to convince Bill to re-employ John, now that John is willing to return. How would you approach persuading Bill to rehire John?

This situation is reminiscent of the book of Philemon, in which a runaway servant named Onesimus, left his master, Philemon. Although you may have some tactics of your own, the apostle Paul, guided by the Holy Spirit, employed masterful techniques to motivate Philemon to accept Onesimus back into his employ. Paul's exceptional wisdom and tact, bestowed upon him by God, enabled him to write persuasive letters that were sometimes difficult to understand, as noted in 2 Peter 3:15-16.

…Just as our dear brother Paul also wrote you with the wisdom that God gave him. He writes the same way in all his letters, speaking in them of these matters. His letters contain some things that are hard to understand… 2 Peter 3: 15-16

Paul was known for using tactful and motivational techniques to debate, share the gospel with philosophers, and resolve church issues. I believe that these techniques are still highly relevant today and can be employed on a daily basis to improve interpersonal relationships and inspire others.

    Chapter 2

    The Letter

    Philemon - The Letter (NIV)

¹Paul, a prisoner of Christ Jesus, and Timothy our brother,

To Philemon our dear friend and fellow worker, ²to Apphia our sister, to Archippus our fellow soldier and to the church that meets in your home: ³Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

    Thanksgiving and Prayer

⁴I always thank my God as I remember you in my prayers, ⁵because I hear about your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love for all the saints. ⁶I pray that
