Introduction
F
ootball is a hugely popular sport in the United States, but many people really don't understand how it works. Even if you're not interested in playing football yourself, you may have watched your favorite player score an incredible touchdown and wanted to celebrate with some knowledge of your own.
Whether you go to NFL games, watch them on TV, listen to talk radio or read articles online – this is the book for you. I've written Football for Beginners with all of you in mind, so whether you are a male or female, mother or father, beginner or veteran – there's always something new to learn and enjoy.
This book will teach you about the game of football and how to watch it like a pro. You will learn the basics of offense, defense, special teams, and more. Watching matches will never be quite the same once you're armed with this knowledge.
You'll get to know the history of the sport, not just in the US, but worldwide – and perhaps most importantly, you will learn who invented it. Perhaps it's time to give thanks to those who came before us!
Of course, one of this book's major focuses is on football in America, a sport that has been around for over three hundred years. For this reason, there is a lot of information about the game's history.
CHAPTER 1
History and Origins of American Football
What Is American Football?
The solution might be the first lesson we learn on this journey. You may be wondering why I made care to put American
before football. First of all, excellent question! Second, I did this for two reasons. First off, soccer is our version of football,
as it is known in other areas of the world, specifically in Europe. That's right, if you go to Germany and start shouting football this
and football that,
the wonderful people there will probably assume you're talking about soccer. To be clear, there are two more well-known football leagues around the world: the Canadian Football League (CFL) and the Australian Football League (AFL). These two leagues have significantly different regulations than our league, the National Football League (NFL), and that may make for interesting reading for a second or third book. It's important to keep in mind that this book solely discusses the NFL!
Let's go on to the topic of this chapter now that that has been addressed. Unfortunately, you have to learn a bit about the fundamentals before you can dive right into the fun. We shall discover a little bit about the history and evolution of football in this chapter. This modification largely concentrates on items like league changes, uniforms, and player safety.
In order to better understand some terminologies and words as we continue to deepen our understanding of this fantastic game, it is crucial to study the fundamentals of the sport!
How and when was football invented?
The question of Who came up with all of this stuff?
arises when you consider all the strange rules, laws, and concepts that go into a typical football game. We need to go back to November 12, 1892, which was over 120 years ago, for
