CHAPTER FOUR

The first thing I did was call my mother back in the United States to tell her I was alive. There was a lot of crying on the other end of the phone, and Sophie felt bad that she hadn’t even thought about the implications of keeping me so long.

She’s making a big drama of it, I said. That’s just the way she is. We barely speak. She probably wouldn’t have noticed but one of my colleagues called her.

Next, I sent word to my colleagues and arranged to take a flight home. I booked us first class because I didn’t think Sophie would be able to fit in a seat otherwise. I was fortunate that she had held onto her passport, and it had not yet expired. Next, we had to find some suitable clothing for Sophie. I knew that was going to be a challenge.

We had to settle for clothing from a men’s big and tall shop. She was able to find a white dress shirt and cargo pants that would fit her. The shirt was tight in certain areas, especially her chest, but at least she wasn’t just in her bikini.

I hate the way this looks on me, Sophie said.

Please, just bear with me until we can get to the United States. I’ll buy you all the custom-made clothing I can. I am quite wealthy. I inherited a lot of money from my grandfather.
