    Ayurveda: What is it anyway?

    You may have read the term Ayurveda on the packaging of a herbal tea or spice blend, come across it while browsing a wellness hotel catalog or visiting a spa, but there is much more to this exotic-sounding word.

    It is true that both nutrition and vitality and body awareness play an important role, but the origin of Ayurvedic teaching is a medical system and has its roots in India. Ayurveda is in fact a very old, traditional healing art of the ancient Indian people of the Vedas. This nature-based alternative medicine is a combination of philosophy and empirical values and is said to be between about 3,000 and 5,000 years old. However, it remains remarkably modern today and is practiced mainly in the South Asian region.
