TONIGHT WASN’T SUPPOSED to end up like this, with Jack on his knees for a cop.
Tonight was supposed to be about payback.
Jack and his buddy Phil are the best graffiti artists in town, no contest. Working together they create masterpieces – bright colours, original images, a heady composition of clean angles, and flowing shapes. No simple name tagging here. They’re the best, they’ve always been the best and everyone knows it – until now.
Two weeks ago, some asshole painted over one of their pieces. It wasn’t even the council covering their colours with institutional grey like usual. No, that’s expected – it’s shitty but Jack and Phil understand that their art has a limited lifespan and that’s part of what makes it special. It’s a shout-out of the underdog against the establishment, and whenever their work is covered up, they throw up a new piece in joyous rebellion.
This time, it’s personal.
It’s a guy from the next town over, someone they’ve heard about though never met. He calls himself Leftside, and his art – if you can even call it that – is painfully nineties, and not in a cool way. His art is always just his name, in the exact same style, though sometimes he changes up the colour if he’s feeling adventurous. It’s nearly as
