The Gifted and Cursed - Melody Lynch

The door squeaked even though I opened it slowly, but it still squeaked loudly. The light above the stove was on, but the rest of the house was dark and silent. I tiptoed towards my aunt’s bedroom and gently pushed open the door. She was fast asleep across her bed.

I leaned over and kissed her forehead.

She stirred but didn’t open her eyes.

Hey, baby. How was work? she asked in a groggy voice.

    It was good, Auntie.

I hadn’t meant to wake her, but I knew she was waiting on me anyway. he couldn’t rest until she knew I was safe even though I was an adult.

She nodded her head before turning away and snuggling under the covers.

I tiptoed down the hallway to my bedroom, threw my gym bag onto the floor and flopped onto my bed. It had been a good night. I cleaned up in tips, and none of the customers got too drunk or rowdy, no one jumping on the stage trying to cop a feel. Stripping at Mac’s was a great place to make fast cash, but we all know the saying easy come, easy go but not for me. Every week, I stashed my tips into my checking account because I was saving up for a down payment. I wanted to get me and Aunt Niecey a new house. I was still going through the first-time home buyers’ program, but I was almost done with the classes, and I was going to be ready when the time came.

I wanted to make sure that we had enough for Aunt Niecey to have the house of her dreams. It was the least I could do. She had given up her entire life to take care of me.

Thoughts of my rocky childhood started to cloud my mind. I didn’t want to go there tonight, so I reached under the bed and wrapped my hands around the neck of the whiskey bottle. A few big swigs of alcohol took the edge off and pushed the memories back just a little. I knew soon the whiskey would lull me into a drunken sleep. Hopefully, it would be one without dreams.
