Introduction
Sadness and depression are not the same things. In this series of books on teens and depression, we'll take a long, hard look at how easy it can be for a teen to believe they just feel sad when they are actually depressed. Many people, including teens, senior citizens and adults do not always recognize they are suffering from depression. After all, as one source says, Depression is different from regular sadness because it lasts longer and affects more than just a person's mood.
Sometimes, people don't see or realize that sadness has lasted for so long and has become so large that it cannot be as simple as feeling a bit blue or sad. It may have even taken

over the person's entire life, leaving them tired, achy, and unable to enjoy any part of life.
Unfortunately, there are always things that cause depression, and this may be why a teen thinks that it is only
sadness. They might move far away from home, have their heart broken by a boyfriend or girlfriend, experience bullying at school, or feel the emotional impact of discrimination. Because modern teens are also more connected due to social media, they may not get any sort of break from the issues leading to depression.
We read headlines of bullying that goes on during school hours and just continues all night on sites like Facebook or through endless text messaging. This can make it easy for a teen to become depressed, and have no way of escaping it.
RECOGNIZING DEPRESSION
Because it can be hard for a depressed teen to know what is happening, it is important for them or their loved ones to know the signs of depression. They include:
Negative thinking - Depression makes it hard to think clearly. Thoughts like, Nothing will ever be better,
or This is too hard for me to deal with,
are very common. This is why a depressed teen believes they are worthless, that life is not worth living, or that no one loves them - even though this is not true at all.
Tired or without energy - A depressed teen often sleeps a lot, feels very tired, and may not move that much. Just doing things like bathing, changing clothes, or going out
