    The Myths of Instagram

Let’s do some quick myth busting as there are things everyone hears about IG that have taken on cult status. I’m here to set them on fire and send them to Valhalla already.

1.) I need to post every day.

Not true. You can post every day if it makes your heart sing, but you don’t have to. Posting every day can be leveraged for growth, but you also don’t have to do that to grow. Two times a week is the minimum. That means you need 8 pieces of content a month. What content? We’ll talk about that later.

2.) I need to have a design theme and a ‘look’.

Not true. This is old news. Now, of course, you can have a whole aesthetic, and if your books have a natural built-in imagery (say you write about cowboys or aliens, something with iconic imagery), and also it makes content creation easier for you, then I would definitely leverage it, but it’s not required.

There are still fussy fancy people on IG, you will see them, but skip the FOMO. They’re outnumbered now. And please note the part where I said a design theme has to make content creation easy for you. Don’t do hard things on IG. It’s not that important. Please save your energy for your core business tasks. If it’s not simple or you’re not having fun, by all that is holy on social media please STOP.

The ONE thing I would suggest for your IG feed is to pick a tone instead of a specific aesthetic or look. Meaning, are you doing dark, jewel, pastel, or light tones? Tone is energy. Tone is vibe. Don’t do a bunch of dark stuff and then randomly switch to bubble gum pink, okay?

Pick a tone and don’t mix it up unless you’re changing things going forward OR it’s a massively popular trend you know will get engagement. Be choosy about interrupting your tone.

Tone may sound like an aesthetic to you, but I promise it’s nowhere near as high maintenance. And also you don’t have to be perfect all the time. You can Zig every once in a while, so long as the Zag makes up the bulk of your content.

On your author account, it’s most important to be YOU at all times. If your tone naturally bounces like a jet-propelled rubber ball, well, don’t take my advice unless you find you can’t get engagement.

Lastly, if you breakout big, that puts you in the big leagues with the hardcore aesthetic tastemakers on IG, and at that point, you want to stop and think about your aesthetic because it can propel you to new heights among the Glitterati of Bookstagram aka sell more books. But that’s for the breakout when you’re working with a company to help you curate your look and not doing all the things by yourself, okay? Until then, just try
