Here’s your coffee, sir.

I place the steaming cup on my boss’s desk with a shy smile and back away. I can’t believe I’m standing in the office of Max Kane, billionaire business magnate. When I joined the temping agency a week ago, I never imagined I’d be sent somewhere like this.

Tall floor-to-ceiling windows display the skyline of London’s financial district, all glittering glass and steel, but Mr Kane’s office has a vintage masculine feel with panelled walls and leather chairs. The faint scent of his cologne, spicy and warm, lingers in the air.

Oh no. I should have put the coffee on a coaster. That desk looks like it’s made from mahogany. The wood has a beautiful red glow, so shiny I can almost see my reflection in it, and I bet it cost more than my annual salary.

Not that I make much as a temporary secretary, but even so.

Mr Kane, however, doesn’t seem to notice my mistake. He takes a sip of his coffee and makes an approving murmur low in his throat. Just the way I like it. Thank you, Lacey.
