The Nanny Diaries #5 - Darling Coxx

    Chapter One

    Nanny for Hire

    DEAR DIARY,

I graduated college with a degree in child care and high hopes for the next chapter of my life. I had planned on working at a day care for a few years. It would give me real world experience to pad out my resume so to speak. I would have a fulfilling career that I loved. My income would allow me to finally move out of my parent's home, get my own place where I would live below my means, saving for my future.

I would begin to date seriously. I was sure I'd meet a few rotten guys, but there'd be some good ones too. I might get disappointed or have my heart broke along the way to finding Mr. Right. We'd get married and buy a house big enough for the family we'd plan on having someday. There would also be room enough for my in home daycare. This way I could stay home with my children while having an income. It's almost impossible to survive without a two income household in today's world.

That was the dream. No, it was more than that. It was a plan. It was what I thought had been a good, solid, strong plan. Then I graduated college, and the real world gave me a reality check.

I searched for months without being able to find a job. At least, I couldn't find one in my chosen profession. I was employed. I still had the job I worked all throughout college at the movie theater. It was only part time, but I could pick up a shift here and there. My boss was unwilling to give me a permanent full time position. I can't blame him really. He knew I'd put my notice in as soon as I found something else.

I had given up. I started to apply for entry level office positions. I had hoped to find something full time with benefits that would afford me a modest apartment. In the back of my mind, I had considered returning to school. It was difficult coming up with another degree that would complement my child care degree that wasn't teaching. And, of course, that was something I wanted to endure the classes to obtain.

Nothing against teachers. I respect them truly. I just don't think it's the job for me.

As I was rewriting my script and generating a new plan for myself, this job prospect fell into my lap. Literally.

I was sitting on a bench in the park, clearing my mind after yet another failed job interview. It was the last of the daycare interviews that I had lined up. No one from my office applications had called me yet. As with all my daycare interviews, it was the same story. Half of them wanted someone with working experience. How am I supposed to have experience if no one will give me a job to build it? The other half pointed out my education. Because I continued my education to get a bachelor’s degree instead of an associates, they felt I was too over qualified for what they were looking for and couldn't afford me.

They most assuredly could afford me. I just needed a job.

Like I said, I was sitting on this bench when a man walking through the park threw his newspaper at the trash bin next to where I was sitting. He missed. It landed in my lap instead. The man yelled his apologies, but continued to walk on by.

I picked up the folded paper and moved to throw it in the trash. I noticed it was open to the classifieds. Right there, in the middle of the page, bolded and outlined, was the ad for the Higgins' nanny.

I laughed. Loudly I might add. I probably looked like a lunatic to anyone around me. Why had I never thought of this before? I had been limiting myself to daycares, nurseries, and kids’ club organizations, but I never considered being a full time nanny. I had also never thought to use print ads as a resource for my job search. I had completely stuck with online listings.

I had given up, but now I had renewed hope. It must have been fated. What are the odds? When I think about how the universe lines things up so perfectly, I am in awe. I had to be sitting just so on that bench that day. The stranger had to be walking through that particular park on a path that would take him by that exact bench at the time I was sitting there. He had to have a newspaper which is almost a thing of the past. It had to be opened to the classified section, folded in half, and folded in half again. His attempt to discard it had to miss and land in my lap perfectly with the side of the Higgins' ad facing up for me to see it. To add on top of that, the millions of other fated events going on all around the world at the same time, it truly is a wonder. I immediately called the phone number listed and set up an interview for the next day.
