About this ebook
Come inside and stay a while. Put your feet on the table. We may be here for no reason, for a while, and that's fine. One day the Smashing Pumpkins will be as far away from someone as Beethoven is from me. That's just how it goes.

The Grimy Job Called Living - Allen Seward
so often so terrible
we live in a universe
where our greatest certainty,
our consistency, is that
we are only ever a step away
from being brutalized by chance.
––––––––
and we try to put a leash
on it, something we can pull on
to yank it back within reason,
to make sense of any of it.
––––––––
can you believe that?
––––––––
no wonder the gods are
so often so terrible!
they’re in on it, and if
they’re not in on it
then they at least understand it
far better than we do.
––––––––
right?
attached are the customers’ trends updated for this week
if the shoe fits,
if the blood runs,
if the cows graze
and if the tiger stalks,
––––––––
if the situation is too dire,
––––––––
if,
––––––––
if the moon turns purple
or green, if.
––––––––
the foot is a loner,
the blood is bitter,
the cows fall over
after the first bite,
––––––––
the tiger limps along
missing a foot,
––––––––
the situation is too dire,
––––––––
the moon turns purple
then green then blue
then yellow.

I got my first rejection letter
of 2023
right around 12:56PM
on the 1st of the year.
I imagine you thought of me
in the midst
of an especially bad hangover,
and I thank you for that.
the nights are thick and
heavy, I know,
and the mornings are stiff
but not in the good way.
you wake up still half-
dreaming,
in a panic or frenzy,
head throbbing, throat dry,
body not wanting to move,
and you think of something you need to do
that can’t wait a day or moment
longer.

thank you,
