Reunited

They were somewhere in West bum-fuck or at least that was what Tasia liked to call it. And as Jamiah watched the space between the homes grow larger and larger till there was only space and no homes, she felt the term was fairly accurate. Only half an hour remained till the three of them reached the small town of Benchwave. Jamiah was relieved to finally be at the end of their journey. They had taken a train from New York to Michigan but ended up three hours from where they needed to be. Benchwave, the small home town of Jamiah.

Oh my god! Tasia whined, she had been doing that the entire ride. Are we there yet?

Jamiah wondered why she even agreed to let her tag along. She hadn’t even asked her, she just happened to be in the room when she’d asked Santha. Jamiah looked over at Santha who sat looking at her phone clearly annoyed as she swiped for entertainment.

Must you do that every hour. Santha hissed, never looking up from her phone.

We’re almost there ladies, 20 minutes till we get to the town. The driver spoke. It was Tasia’s 5th time whining so it was his 5th time updating their course for Tasia. Something Jamiah took notice of.

Jamiah recognized him from when she lived in town. He was the shopkeeper’s son, the general shop everyone in town frequented. His name was Jason and he was an entitled spoiled brat. At least that’s how she remembered him. When meeting him earlier she was surprised he greeted her kindly, considering their relationship as children. They hated her, the children of her town had steered clear of her because of her skin color, her chubby size and how close she was to the ever so difficult Butta Dexal. Jamiah’s body shivered at the thought of Butta. She gritted her teeth and pushed down the excitement replacing it with anger instead.

Jamiah remembered how despite being a couple years younger than him he stuck to her like flies to shit, something the adults of the town used to always say. He, like others, often spoke ill of her size, and talked bad about her hair. He would poke her fat and other things she considered annoying even till this day. Yet, he was still her friend. He was ready and available to come to her aid when others picked on her. He’d spent long hours helping her understand her homework. He fixed her things others had broken, and then dealt with the ones who broke them. He kept her company in a town where not many people liked her.

Jamiah exhaled relaxing, she and Butta had not separated on good terms. When she told him of her mothers choice to leave, he did not take it well. He had seemed okay with it at first, then he flipped a switch. He told her good riddance and how much he wanted her gone. He became a living nightmare till the day she left.
