INTRODUCTION
WHY GIFTS FROM MOM?
What was your reaction when you first learned your loved one had dementia? Surprise? Outright Frustration? Depression? Had you been seeing signs and dismissing them? Were you suspecting something was different about the way that family member was behaving? And did you think in that moment, that your life and relationship with that person was going to change forever?
For me, it was fall of 2018 when we received the diagnosis that my mother, Arlene Iaia, had vascular dementia. While it was difficult to hear the truth of those words, I wasn’t surprised. Over the past year or so, we had seen several significant changes in Mom’s behavior, none of which were encouraging. There were minor differences like forgetting a name occasionally or telling the same story several times. However, through that summer, my family and I began to see signs such as a loss of connection with work and activities that had always been second nature to her. This culminated in my getting the phone call I’d dreaded after my Mom’s visit to her neurologist.
What was most frustrating about the official diagnosis was its finality. There was nothing to do. No second opinion to seek out. As you may know, at present, there is no known cure for Alzheimer’s or dementia.
By the way, Dementia is the general term, and Alzheimer’s disease is a specific type of dementia. Throughout this book, I refer to them interchangeably.
Either way, receiving this diagnosis is heart-wrenching. There is no pill to take, plan of treatment, or special program to join. Your loved one has it, and you, as the caregiver, are expected to sit and watch while the person you know and love becomes a shadow of their former selves.
