INTRODUCTION
Memory is a funny thing. Mine is, at least. In many ways, I would characterize it as well below average. Events in my life—often events that seemed enormously significant at the time—have turned to vapor. People’s names, their faces, details of their lives and their families’ lives elude me. Entire conversations have been misfiled, or they’ve disappeared altogether. I once spent several weeks trying to remember whether a great aunt of mine was alive or dead. Then she sent me five dollars for my birthday. She was alive.
Thank goodness there’s more to memory than remembering which day during our daughter’s soccer season I’ve signed up to be the snack dad.
There are other layers of memory—authentic stories of childhood, of families and friends and pets and teachers—that are far more resonant and meaningful, and I’m very grateful whenever I can access them. I’m grateful, too, for the small, everyday happenings that unexpectedly spark those
