    Meredith stared sourly at the back of the waiter’s departing head as having shown us to our table, he slapped down the list of Happy Hour Specials and walked away.

    Nothing but class.

    She dragged back the heavy chair, which scraped against the scarred wooden floor with a grinding, fingernails-down-the-blackboard moan that made a number of people at the other tables flinch. A few cast dirty looks.

    It struck me as just the sort of thing she would know how to do. Though it took a little effort, my own chair slid back without sounding like something out of Edgar Allan Poe.

    Meredith plopped herself down. "Snooty little jerkwad couldn’t be bothered to pull our chairs out for us. Thinks he belongs uptown, not here in le Maison d’Round Chuck’s."

    From her pebbled leather purse she pulled out a lipstick case and reinforced the rather pouty set of her mouth with a sure hand. Very Betty Davis. I wondered how much mirror time you had to put in to perfect such a gesture.
