    Believing Without Seeing

    Lesson Passage: Hebrews 11: 1–3, 8, 23, 31–34, 39–40

    NRSV

NOW faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.

2 Indeed, by faith our ancestors received approval.

3 By faith we understand that the worlds were prepared by the word of God, so that what is seen was made from things that are not visible.

    • • • • • •

8 By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to set out for a place that he was to receive as an inheritance, and he set out, not knowing where he was going.

    • • • • • •

23 By faith Moses was hidden by his parents for three months after his birth, because they saw that the child was beautiful, and they were not afraid of the king’s edict

    • • • • • •

31 By faith Rahab the prostitute did not perish with those who were disobedient, because she had received the spies in peace.

32 And what more should I say? For time would fail me to tell of Gideon, Barak, Samson, Jephthah, of David and Samuel and the prophets,

33 who through faith conquered kingdoms, administered justice, obtained promises, shut the mouths of lions,

34 quenched the power of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, were made strong out of weakness, became mighty in war, put foreign armies to flight.

39 Yet all these, though they were commended for their faith, did not receive what was promised,

40 since God had provided something better so that they would not, apart from us, be made perfect.

    Today’s Lesson Story

Do you know what faith is? To have faith means to believe without having already seen what you are believing for. It is by faith that we believe God is the Creator of the world and everything in it. The first few verses of the Bible tell us that in the beginning, the Earth had no form or shape. It was void, which means there was nothing there but the deepest of darkness. Suddenly, when God’s breath swept over the nothingness, there was light (Genesis 1:1–3), and God made something out of nothing! We were not present when God made the world, but with faith, we can believe in our Creator.

To put faith in everyday terms, you might believe for a particular gift on your birthday, which won’t arrive for another month. You have not yet seen the gift with your eyes, but because your parents promise you will receive it, day after day, you have faith in your heart that you will indeed get the gift. If it is that easy to have faith for a birthday gift, how much more can we have faith that God’s promises for us will come true? Abraham, Moses, and Rahab were biblical heroes of the faith who believed God.

Abraham, who was originally named Abram, was counted worthy because of his faith. Abram worshiped false gods, but when he met the one true Jehovah God, he believed; and because of Abraham’s faith, God called him righteous (Genesis 15:6). It was also by faith that Abraham was able to follow God’s command to move from his homeland in Ur to a new home that he had never seen. Have you ever moved to a strange place? Moving is not easy, but Abraham trusted God. He packed up his entire family and all of his possessions to move to the place God had given him. It was because Abraham believed that God promised him as many descendants as the stars in the sky.

It was because of the faith of his mother that Moses was allowed to survive. At the time that Moses was born, the Hebrews were slaves in Egypt, and the pharaoh or ruler made a decree that all newborn boy babies be killed. Moses’ mother wrapped her baby Moses in soft cloth and hid him in a basket sealed with tar so that it would float on the surface of the Nile River. The pharaoh’s daughter found Moses in the water, fell in love with him, and kept him for her own. Because of that, Moses was saved from death and reared in the royal palace. Moses would one day fulfill God’s purpose for his life and lead the Hebrew people out of Egyptian
