About this ebook

Lurking in the water, Gods sang of debts and change.

Water lapped against the side of the barge, slapping, gurgling, endlessly burbling along against the hull, carrying songs of fish, of snake-heads flowing up and down the river, of mer chattering, clicking, laughing in counterpoint to the water's ever-present song.

Duru just wanted some sleep. Was that too much to ask? The water didn't have to grab his attention and force him to listen.

But it did. A debt was owed, and Duru had a choice to make that might change not just his life but the entire world, too.

    RIVER SUMMER

Water lapped against the side of the barge, slapping, gurgling, endlessly burbling along against the hull. It sang of the fish along the riverbed, the snake-heads lazily flowing up and down the River. Mer song echoed through its yammering, clicking, shouting, singing, laughing in exact counterpoint to the water's ever-present song.

Duru wrapped his pillow around his head. He just wanted some sleep. Was that too much to ask? The muddy water didn't have to grab his magic and force him to listen. It never used to back when he lived on land. Why couldn't it stop already, just for a few hours so that he could sleep?

It never stopped. The sound continued whether the barge was moving or docked, heavy load or none at all. Weird that a sound that didn't exist could be so overwhelming that you flat
