Connor Whiteley

Hello, I'm Connor Whiteley, I am an 18-year-old who loves to write creatively, and I wrote my Brownsea trilogy when I was 14 years old after I went to Brownsea Island on a scout camp. At the camp, I started to think about how all the broken tiles and pottery got there and somehow a trilogy got created. Moreover, I love writing fantasy and sci-fi novels because you’re only limited by your imagination. In addition, I'm was an Explorer Scout and I love camping, sailing and other outdoor activities as well as cooking.Furthermore, I do quite a bit of charity work as well. For example: in early 2018 I was a part of a youth panel which was involved in creating a report with research to try and get government funding for organised youth groups and through this panel. I was invited to Prince Charles’ 70th birthday party and how some of us got in the royal photograph. Finally, I am going to university and I hope to get my doctorate in clinical psychology in a few years.

Fantasy Short Story Collection Volume 5 - Connor Whiteley

    GAME OF KINGS

There are reasons why people call me, of all people, the God King of the Realm and they believe I have magical powers, the gods and goddesses love me and why the amazing people I rule actually love me. I like to believe it’s because I’m the best ruler we’ve ever had but there is one other reason why I am known as the God King.

Because I have to play games with the gods from time to time to stop them from killing all of us.

I admit it’s strange and twisted and even a little barbaric considering the devious Faith Militants keep forcing me and my subjects to worship gods and goddesses that want us to die, but that’s life unfortunately and I might be King but the Militants are a lot more powerful than me in reality, something I really want to change in the future.

As it was that time of year again when the Dark Gods and Goddesses call upon me, one moment I was in my amazing throne room with its smooth light grey marble walls, golden throne and immensely long dining table in the middle.

    Then I blinked.

And I instantly found myself no longer in the Realm. Everything around me was covered in darkness, an icy cold darkness that stretched on endlessly with only the odd tendril of thin grey smoke swirling around in the far distance.

It honestly looked as if I was merely floating there and normally that would have been fine, I had played these games more than enough times to know what everything looked like, but today there was something off about the entire space.

Normally, the sweet aromas of ginger, sugar and rum filled the air, and that seriously helped me to get in the mood for some gaming with Dark foul gods and goddesses. But today there was none of that smell, instead I only smelt the freshly cooked flesh of something.

Then I instantly knew who I was facing as I heard the sound of crackling logs on a fire echo around me despite there not being a smooth surface. One echo I would have put down to my mind playing tricks on me, but there were so many echoes around me that I just knew this was going to be flat out dangerous.

    And deadly too.

I went to take a step forward and found myself in front of a massive crackling, roaring fire with red, yellow and orange flames dancing so high into the sky that they were easily tens of kilometres high.

The fire merely floated there like I was amongst the pitch darkness and even though I could now smell black smoke trying to choke out my lungs, I couldn’t see any.

I am sorry I called you again old friend, a snake-like voice said to me.

We are not friends Serpentine, I said still looking at the fire.

A pop next to my left made me frown even more as I looked at the Dark God that had summoned me. Serpentine was exactly what you would imagine from a God dedicated to death, bondage and sadism.

His (or her depending on the story) head was a mixture of a snake's and human’s heads with massive slices and scares and burn marks littering it. Serpentine wasn’t attractive in the slightest and I really hated his long red cloak made from snake scales that made a rustling sound when he moved.

Two fangs shot out of his mouth as he smiled at me and we both focused back on the fire.

What game did you want to play today? I asked just wanting to get this over and done with.

You make it sound like I have a choice, Serpentine said. I might be a dark god and the one that summoned you but I am a puppet for Jous, Goddess of Games, Playing and Murder,

As much as I didn’t want to believe him that actually made a lot of sense, and in all the folklore I had read recently about Jous, she wasn’t right in the head at all. She was crazy on a good day, psychotic on the bad days.

    The crackling fire went silent.

That is right my dearest Serpentine, the fire said as it changed to form two massive fiery lips. You are my puppet. A stupid puppet and there will only be one victor today. The other will die,

My stomach immediately tensed. I didn’t want to be here, I wanted
