Chris and Chloe both stare at the white plastic stick in her hand, waiting with baited breath, neither of them daring to blink or look away for a moment. Any second now, a symbol will appear in the tiny window built into the body of the white plastic stick and potentially change their lives. They’re sitting on the edge of the bed together, the scene of many memorable adventures. Chris allows his mind to wander for a few moments – did happen here, in this bed? Chloe’s fingers tremble slightly. Chris slides his hand underneath hers for support, briefly touching their golden wedding rings together.

‘We’ll be okay,’ Chris says, offering Chloe a reassuring smile.

Chloe exhales. She glances back down at her hand and gasps. The tiny window built into the white plastic stick bears a small but unmistakable symbol: a black plus sign.

‘Oh my god!’ Her jaw drops open. ‘Holy shit, ohmigod!’

They leap off the bed, both staring in delighted surprise at that tiny black plus sign, standing out against the white plastic like a neon beacon in the night. Chloe squeals with delight and throws her arms around Chris’s neck. He grabs her in a tight embrace and they kiss, unable to hold back their happiness. Chloe bounces on her toes in giddiness, squeezing Chris in a fierce hug of sheer, wondrous glee.

‘I’m pregnant! Oh, my God! I’m pregnant!’

For a brief moment, nothing else matters. They laugh. They hug. They kiss. Everything in the world is absolutely perfect. Chloe’s eyes gleam. Her skin already has a soft glow about it.
