    FORWARD

Writing a book about weight loss, or any other non-fiction topic, is within your grasp if you can bring expertise or personal experience to the exercise. Sure, there are lots of books out there already, but your unique perspective will resonate with many people because they share your point of view, your challenge or simply need your unique help.

This book has been created for people who want to write a NON-FICTION book and deals with the many intricacies of writing and publishing that genre.

Most early-stage authors who want to write a non-fiction book also have a full-time career or responsibilities. This book and program have been designed especially for them. If you use this book as your template and commit one hour per day to your own writing, you will complete a well-written manuscript that will bring credibility, opportunity, and perhaps much more to you. You do not need to be a professional writer, English literature major, or a graduate student of spelling, punctuation, and grammar to become a successful author. You need a reason to create a book, an opinion to share, knowledge to pass along, a perspective to offer, a story to tell, a desire for increased exposure, recognition, or credibility. It also helps, but is not essential, if you can honestly include in your various networking profiles the word, reader. Almost every bestselling author started out by being a habitual reader – just ask someone like Stephen King.

To be a successful author in this world, you might need some guidance, encouragement, and advice, and you now have that before your eyes. That, combined with the willingness to carve out an hour a day from your overloaded schedule, will create a new status for your profile, published author.

    INTRODUCTION

O h, you’re writing a book. I’ve tried to write a book several times and can’t seem to get past the first few pages. How did you do it?

Everyone who has shared the fact that they have written a book has heard this remark from an erstwhile, yet struggling, author-in-the-making. You may have decided to read this book because you have experienced the same problem - can’t get past the first few pages, can’t find the time, and can’t seem to get motivated. I understand what you are going through because I have heard it many times from clients or workshop attendees. Or, I have used the same excuses myself. With little planning, I powered my way through my first book by leaving a job I hated for an hour every morning. Sitting at a table in a nearby shopping mall food court, I spent the time writing. It was an escape, to be sure, but I still felt like I was accomplishing something. Justification of my daily ritual was easy. Fortunately, the routine worked so well that I wrote a second book in the same manner but created a better working process for myself. Writing allowed a creative energy to release itself that had been kindled through a strong interest in stage acting, but which had remained unfulfilled beyond high school.

An outlet for something that had been bottled up inside for several decades came forward. Along the way, I spent over thirty years in various business environments that resulted in several things, but especially a strong need to bring process to a project and keep a constant eye on both sales and the bottom line.

Following the publication of my first book, The West Coast Trail: One Step at a Time, my wife threw a big party and invited a lot of friends. Several things came to light as a result: first, I sold over a hundred books that night (it almost paid for the party) which was great. My ego took an enormous boost from all the flattering (and a few envious) comments. I cannot count how many times I heard the sentence I started this introduction with, I’ve tried to write a book several times too, but...

Now, I was surrounded that night by some very intelligent, well-spoken, motivated, and interesting people who were more than capable of doing what I had done, or so I thought. One of the other comments that I heard then and many times since was, I just can’t seem to move it forward, can’t seem to find the time and motivation... These sorts of things played around in my mind and what developed was a back-and-forth battle between my creative self and my business self. I wanted to understand on the one hand, and help on the other.

The process section of my brain started looking at my own methods of writing, study other successful authors and begin researching what aids and help existed for aspiring writers. My creative side began wondering about how I could best assist people who could not create their own books. By chance, an acquaintance asked if I might provide her with some one-on-one coaching in her effort to write a book. I didn’t
