Chapter 1

The clock seemed to tick by with an almost audible hum as the seconds stretched into minutes that dragged their feet across the floor like a weary traveler seeking refuge from a relentless storm. Each movement of the pendulum felt like an eternity. It was a choreographed dance of time itself, marking off each passing moment with a steady thud that echoed throughout the small café where I found myself confined behind the counter. My life had become nothing more than a mundane routine of brewing coffee and taking orders. I served cup after cup to customers who barely acknowledged my existence. They came and went without so much as a smile or word of gratitude. But what could you expect from people who treated cafes as just another stop along their daily commute?

As the morning wore on, the stream of customers began to dwindle until there were only a few stragglers left lingering over their cups while they scrolled through social media feeds or read newspapers with headlines screaming about some new disaster or scandal. A sense of loneliness settled around me as if I too belonged among those empty pages and cold screens. Was this all there was to life - merely shuffling back and forth between work and home with nothing but idle chatter to fill up the emptiness? Wasn’t there something more meaningful waiting out there somewhere?

The bell above the door chimed softly as another customer entered, interrupting my train of thought. He looked tired, his eyes heavy with sleep deprivation. His hair was unkempt, tousled in every direction by a fierce wind that must have been blowing outside. As he approached the counter, I braced myself for another monotonous transaction. Instead, however, he surprised me when he asked me how I was doing today.
