Detective's Note
From kidnapped princes to cursed temples, I love to solve all mysteries! I may be known as the famous Hailey Haddie nowadays, but once upon a time I was just a young vampire detective with big dreams. Perhaps you even heard about me from junior crime solver Ellie Scaredy Bat
Spark.
In the following pages, you will find some interesting experiences taken from my case log.
In these accounts, every fact, every clue necessary to the solution is given. The answer is in the story itself. You need look nowhere else. Each problem has only one solution.
Written in three hundred words or so, these short stories can be read in about a minute and solved in a few more.
I hope you will find them as enjoyable to read as they were to write.
Good luck, detective!

Prologue
PRESENT DAY
The lights on the time machine blinked aggressively like an overly lit Christmas tree as I shakily tied on my leather and wood sandals. Each flash highlighted the fresh pink paint slapped on the gadget’s splintered coffin body. I wondered if Lou had purposely painted the invention one of my favorite colors to make it less intimidating.
The last time I’d used this contraption was a couple weeks ago to travel back in time to solve mysteries. And it was one rocky ride! The landings were rough, the time machine was dark, and the noises were loud and scary. In the end, it was worth it to see so many cool places and help solve mysteries. But the idea of traveling in it again made the raw liver and strawberry sandwich in my stomach churn. One of my vampire fangs dug into my lower lip as I tried to calm my breath.
I like the new color,
I said in a shaky voice. I tried to clear the smell of paint out of my throat, but it was quickly replaced by the acrid black smoke puffing out the top of the machine. I jumped as a jolt of electricity sparked between the wires tangled with the strings of blinking lights.
The paint isn’t the only change,
Lou said with a forced smile. His vampire fangs looked duller than usual—and so did the rest of him. Everything from his mop of unkempt hair to his thin frame seemed to be fading into the background. Lou circled the machine. I adjusted the landing mechanism, so landings should be softer. Oh, and it is far less loud now—
As if on cue, the time machine let out a rumbling growl that shook the cement floor. An ear-splitting hiss followed. Two of Lou’s cats that were napping nearby, a fat tabby and a skinny orange kitten, bolted toward the kitty flap on the lab door. Beakers and papers crashed to the ground as they frantically tried to escape the piercing noise.
image-placeholderOr it is somehow louder,
Lou yelled over the machine. He lifted a flap on the coffin’s side and pushed a blue button. The machine settled slightly, and the door popped open with a squeal. I gulped, looking at the dark, splintered interior of the coffin. My hands trembled as I smoothed out my white dress and adjusted the gold waist belt.
"Lou, are you absolutely positive that I
