Introduction
The Buddhacarita, which is a Sanskrit poem written by Asvaghosa in the second century, is the oldest known story of the life of Buddha. The narrative begins with the magical birth of Prince Siddhartha and concludes with his enlightenment. This ancient myth depicts Buddha's unwavering quest for knowledge about the nature of reality. The story combines a hero's journey, Buddhist philosophy, historical facts, and fantastical elements.
I have created a modern sequel while remaining true to the original storyline and many of the original images. However, I transformed the structure into seven-line stanzas to imbue it with enchantment and lyricism. The rhyme scheme and alliteration are reminiscent of olden times. The original English translations are scholarly linguistic interpretations are difficult to read. This poetic version of The Buddhacarita deviates from the literal translations, but it is my hope that the poetic license used will bring joy and meaning to the modern reader

Canto 1: The Birth of Siddhartha
Sing sway shout heavenly praise
Celebrate for baby Buddha is born
His luminous lofty body raised
Bringing benefit to beings forlorn
Smashing surly darkness asunder
A sparkling sun a trembling thunder
Exquisite as the moon
The preeminent prince of magic place
White widespread with cumulus clouds
Spires palaces touching sky's lace
Royal rulers righteous noble proud
The townsfolk warmly issuing smiles
Everybody rich sans pride or guile
