I dedicate this work to my Karen Schnaubelt, Jamie Hanrahan, and Leslie Johnston, great costumers all, who encouraged me to write these novels.
I would also like to thank my cover artist, Fredd Gorham, for working so closely with me to get the images of my characters so close to the ones I have in my head.
Author’s Note:
The events of The Flight to LystRa take place during the same time period as In the Markets of Tyre

A note on time and distance:
Each of the Civilized Nations in the Orion Arm have different units of measurements. The text uses the appropriate scale the characters would use. While I have inserted parentheticals to translate any measurement units used, there is a table at the end defining the various units of measurements.

Bhom
Bhom – Endothermic, oxygen breathing, pseudo-mammals. Bhom are bipedal, with a stocky build. Their legs muscular with a knee and ankle joints and end in a three-toed hoof. Their three fingers and thumbs are thick with heavy nails. Bhom heads are long and wide with large ears. Adults have impressive horns with heavy bosses over the top of the head. Both males and females have horns. They have long hair over their entire bodies in various shades of yellow. Bhom are sexually dimorphic in size and build. Males are heavy bodied and stand about 1.8 to 2.0 meters tall. Females are slimmer in build and stand about 1.5 to 1.6 meters tall.
Chemosh Empire
Akood – Endothermic oxygen breathing pseudo-avians. They are four-limbed, two limbs acting as manipulators, lizard-like in configuration. Their wings are long, allowing Akood to soar for long periods. Their long, serpentine tales are prehensile and are used to move on the ground and to perch. They are covered in pseudo-feathers, thinner at the base than Terran feathers and ending in a wider, egg-shaped section. The head resembles a giraffe’s, but their needle-toothed jaws can extend from their mouths. An Akood stands about 1.2 to 1.4 meters long with a wingspan of nearly 3 meters.
Chemosh – Endothermic oxygen and water breathers. Chemosh resemble a cross between a wolf and a manta ray. Chemosh bodies are manta like supported by two powerful, wolf-like legs. Chemosh bodies stand horizontally. The head of a Chemosh is wolf-like with gills along the sides. The ends of the wing-fins have fingers but the primary manipulators are six long tongues. Chemosh stand about 2 to 2.5 meters tall and nearly 4 meters long.
Ckk – Ectothermic nitrogen/carbon dioxide breathing pseudo-plants. Ckk resemble a conical bundle of sticks. Manipulation of those sticks allow the Ckk to move and manipulate objects. Arranged randomly through the bundle are bundles of light-sensitive eye-buds. Vocals are produced by a bladder deep in the body. Ckk vary widely in size and configuration. Some have small blossoms, some don’t. Some have thorns, some don’t. They can vary between 0.5 to 1.2 meters in size.
D'Erb – Endothermic oxygen breathers. D’Erb are four-limbed bipeds. They are covered in a coat of short hair in various shades of forest to pine green. Both legs and arms have two joints. The legs are similar to dog or cat, though the space from the second knee to the feet are longer, ending in broad circular feet with four nails where toes have nearly disappeared. On the arms the elbow is backward compared to a huma. The upper arm is much longer than would be considered normal on a human, extended past the waist. The arms end in hands with three fingers and a thumb, the thumb set on the outside of the hand. They have a long neck ending in a spheroidal head. There is a crest bisecting the head. The mouth is circular. The teeth are like rotating gears. The spheroid head has four eyes. a line of heavy hair runs from the crest over each eye which then turns into a long, intertwined combination of hair and nerve tissue depends from each eye. Called aaa;zhr these strands can sense electrical fields. D’Erb stand about 1.6 to 1.8 meters tall.
Doru – Endothermic oxygen breathing pseudo-mammals They are four-limbed bipeds with plumb bodies. Their feet are elephantine in shape and their hands have five fingers, one of which is a thumb. Doru necks are long ending with a long, thin face with large eyes. Doru stand between 1.7 and 2.1 meters tall.
Fradhaa – Endothermic oxygen breathing pseudo-mammals The Fradhaa have a long body shaped like a flattened cylinder. They are eight-limbed hexapods. The head is long and somewhat wolf-like. Fradhaa have four large ears which can swivel in almost any direction. Fradhaa are blind and do not possess even the hint of eyes. Their fur can move and serves an important part of their communication, even though they cannot see it. A combination of the sound made by the movement as well as shifting electrical fields, which Fradhaa can detect, imparts a great deal of information. Fradhaa are stand about 1.5 meters tall and are 3 meters long. Fradhaa partner with a symbiotic species which serve as their eyes as well as other functions. The symbiotes are an armored, crustacean-like creature. Their bodies have multiple segments and vaguely resembles a shrimp. It stands on six segmented legs with four smaller manipulators. The have four large eyes and a nasty mouth which can deliver a nasty bite. The symbiote can inflate itself in a threat display. Symbiotes are about 30 cm. long.
Guayk – Endothermic oxygen and water breathing pseudo-amphibians. They have long, sinuous bodies with a smooth, soft skin, colors varying widely. The end of the body ends in a semicircular frill that they use as their main swimming organ. Their heads have two mouths and three eyes. They can walk on four of their fins and the other two are manipulators. A Guayk averages around 1 meter in length.
Nam Patal – Ectothermic oxygen and water breathers. Nam Patal have a large, oval center mass ringed with eye-spots. The central body is supported by five, pinkish-red tentacles. From the top of the disc extend a variable number of tentacles of various sizes. Nam Patal stand between 1.25 and 1.75 meters tall.
Naruuina – Endothermic water breathing pseudo-cephalapods. Naruuina have a mass of between twelve and twenty-four highly mobile tentacles. They have two large, mobile eyes across the top edge of the tentacles and two smaller, less sensitive eyes below. Most of their bodies are covered in a tear-drop-shaped shell. They use two large, colorful fins for balance. They move by water jets siphoned from their tentacles to the rear of the shell. Naruuina average 1.2 to 1.7 meters in length.
RooWhee Twee – Endothermic oxygen breathers. RooWhee Twee have oval-shaped bodies, flat on the bottom and domed above somewhat resembling a Terran beetle. They have eight legs, more resembling a Terran chameleon than an insect. They have wing covers like a beetle and four, useable wings. Their eyes are able to focus on both near and far objects with excellent resolution. RooWhee Twee range from 0.7 to 1.3 meters in length and about 0.3 to 0.5 meters tall
Vrn Tk – Endothermic oxygen breathers. Vrn Tk are four-limbed bipeds and have a superficial resemblance to Terran pangolins and ground sloths. Their entire bodies are covered in hard, leaf-shaped scales. Hands and feet are clawed, but also have a chamber in the center from which tendrils can extend. The hand tentacles are the main manipulators, and the foot tendrils help anchor the Vrn Tk to the ground. Vrn Tk have a second head on the tip of their tails. This head has fighting tusks, almost like axe-blades as well as armored eyes. They speak primarily, though not exclusively, through the tail-head. Vrn Tk stand 2 to 3 meters tall.

Confederation
Bonzuc Garso – Endothermic pseudo-Ichthyoid. Bonsuc Garso have a slim, white to cream, fish-like bodies with a neat, spade-shaped tail. The head appears like a mass of sea-plants; fronds and leaves of green, pink, and grayish-blue. The top edge of its body had a deep green line along its length and the bottom edge was pink. Bonzuc Garso range from 2.5 to 3 meters long.
Wrrgoul – Ectothermic Amphibious (not pseudo-amphibian). Wrrrgoul can breathe either oxygen or water, though they require a high-humidity oxygen mix. The main body of a Wrrrgoul is human-shaped with four arms ending in eight-digit hands, including two opposable thumbs. The lower body has eight tentacles, four large and four smaller. Wrrrguol have six eyes, two large and four smaller ones that are normally closed, open only when needed in deeper water. Wrrrguol stand
2.5 to 3 meters tall.
Giee Go
OlkYɁfahlʘ – Endothermic oxygen breathers. The OlkYɁfahlʘ are composed of ten nearly-identical disc-shaped segments. The first segment has a thick neck and an ovoid head with a broad mouth and big eyes. The Tenth segment ends in a flattened dome like shape. All segments have four, equally spaced legs arranged around the circumference, with those on the front and tenth segments longer, with longer fingers generally curled up within the palms. The second through nine segments have smaller eyes, ears, and mouths arranged around the edges of disc. Each segment is connected to the next with a spring-like coil. OlkYɁfahlʘ are covered in brightly, colored fur, ranging through almost any possible color. Pinks, reds, blues and greens are most common, but oranges, purples and other shades exist as well. OlkYɁfahlʘ range from 1.5 to 2.5 meters in length when not extended.
Laanyr Clan Heer
Aat’t’t – Endothermic oxygen breathers. The Aat’t’t are small sapients. They roughly resemble Terran seahorses with four limbs, all of which can be used as hands, and four wings edged in stiff bristles. An Aat’t’t emits a glow whose color is unique to each individual Aat’t’t. Aat’t’t tend to think and speak very quickly and are extremely verbose.
Laanyr Clan Heer – Endothermic oxygen breathers. Laanyr Clan Heer are six-limbed quadrupeds, centauroid in configuration. Their manipulative limbs grow from the juncture of lower and upper body. While the lower body resembles a large Terran horse or Terran Eland, the upper body does not resemble a human. The upper body is thick and grows smoothly up to the head. The Laanyr head is long. They have horns and strong teeth, with protruding fangs. A Laanyr’s fangs can twist when angry, pointing forward rather than down. Laanyr have three sexes, male, female, and finisher; all three necessary to birth a child and all three contributing to the child’s genetic structure. Finishers are considerably larger than males and females and dominate leadership positions. An adult finisher typically stands 2.5 meters to the top of the head, while males and females stand 1.5 to 1.8 meters.
Lystra
Anthrassass – Ectothermic pseudo-Arthropod. Anthrassass have four body segments with wings and legs on the second and third segment, two sets of wings on each segment and three sets of legs. The head is arc-shaped without eyes, but with two metallic looking spikes used for sensing. They average around 20 cm. long. They can manipulate electronic and magnetic fields that help them fly.
LystRa-spa – Spherical methane breathers. LystRa-spa have a ring of bladders around the upper and lower circumference. The bladders help regulate position and movement and can extrude necessary manipulators. They have a ring of eyes around the central circumference. They average a 1.3 to 1.8 meters in diameter.
Kiuqhilannagos – Endothermic pseudo-archaebacterioids. Their home planet has an oxygen/nitrogen atmosphere laced with sulfur dioxide, though most species can breathe it with aid. The species is humanoid in form, though thin. They have a skirt, open in the front, growing from the waist. It extends to the ground and is edged with tiny cilia that are used for feeding. The feet are digitigrade while the hand are similar to humans. Their heads are narrow and long with decorative spines ending in an arrow-shaped feathers. They have a ring of four eyes across the face with four ears. They do not have mouths, but across that area of the face is a plate-like construction with a pattern of bumps, dots, ridges and smooth areas. To each side of the plate are two antennae
like limbs which they draw across the plate like bows, creating sounds for speaking. They stand about 1.6 to 2.2 meters tall.
Tavaed-hil – Endothermic creatures. They have a cone-shaped body supporting twelve tentacles along its length. The base of the cone rises highest and is the front of the Tavaed-hil. They have a columnar neck with a wedge-shaped head with a small, squared off chin. On the front of the wedge is a V-shaped extension which widens at the top of the v. On the bottom of the v is a mouth edges with beak-like protrusions. Along each arm of the v is a sequence of six, glowing eyes. The tentacles can extrude sharp, bony extrusions which can be used as weapons or tools. They stand about 1 to 1.3 meters tall.
uftHoweruu – Endothermic creatures. uft-Howeruu are massive quadrupeds with a large, beaked head for crushing rocks and shells to retrieve moisture. Four tentacles set around the head are also used to probe for food and liquid and can be used as manipulators. uftHoweruu stand about 1.6 meters tall and are 2 to 2.4 meters long.
Kralk Desmense
Gntugd – Endothermic oxygen breathers. Gntugd are winged bipeds. They are large and bulky, their hide is thick and protective. The have smallish heads, flat in shape with large, fanged mouths and oval eyes. Their hands and feet are clawed. Their home planet, Ugd, has a very, thick atmosphere, nearly as thick as Venus’. In that type of atmosphere, they are capable of gliding on their wings. Gntugd stand about 2.25 to 2.5 meters tall with a wingspan of 3.5 meters.
Kralk – Endothermic pseudo avian-mammalian, oxygen breathers. Kralk are six-limbed quadrupeds, descended from a species that once had wings but lost them long ago. Their limbs resemble bird-like claws, and they are covered in substance that resembles a cross between fur and feathers. They have beaks resembling a Terran seed-eating avian but filled with rows of razor sharp plates. Kralk have from one to five tails, each ending in a pad with a hidden sting and an eye which rarely opens unless the Kralk is fighting. Kralk stand about 1 meter tall and are about 1.5 to 2 meters long.
Sunagar – Endothermic oxygen breathers. Sunagar have a small, spherical central mass with numerous tentacles emerging from the top and bottom of the central mass. The tentacles tend to move constantly. There are eyes tucked in between the tentacles which are
