About this ebook

A simulation, through a war game, of what would have been a military confrontation between the forces of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and those of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) at the height of the Cold War. Or, also, a projection of what a war between NATO and Russia could look like.

In  my  Military  History  study  project  I  rely  on  a analytical  summary,  I  analyze  and  highlight  the decisive  factors,  before  simulating  alternative  what if…  hypotheses  through  a  board  game.  In  the simulation,  all  possibilities  of  the  purpose  of  the study  are  completed,  when  the  past  of  history  is analyzed  based  on  the  theory  of  the  present  and projected  for  similar  situations  in  the  future.  Since 2010  I  have  published  the  following  series  of simulations:  I.  Historical  Simulation  of  the  Wars  of the  First  Empires;  II.  Historical  Simulation  of  the Wars  in  Classical  Greece;  III.  Historical  Simulation of  the  Roman  Wars;  IV.  Historical  Simulation  of Wars  in  the  Medieval  Era;  V.  Historical  Simulation of  Wars  in  the  Modern  Era  (1453  to  1774);  VI. Historical  Simulation  of  Wars  in  the  Age  of Revolutions  (1775  to  1860);  "VII.  Historical Simulation  of  Wars  in  the  Industrial  Age  (1861  to

    6 GEOPOLITICAL  ANALYSIS

    Geographic  Central  Europe

    Im  1:  Geographic  Central  Europe.

It  defines  the  natural  boundaries  of  Central Europe  with  neighboring  regions  to  the  north  across the  Baltic  Sea,  i.e.  northern  Europe  (or Scandinavia),  and  to  the  south  across  the  Alpine mountain  range  and  the  Balkan  peninsula  across the  river  Danube  basin.

The  borders  of  Western  Europe  and  Eastern

Europe  are  geographically  less  defined  and  for  that

    7

reason  cultural  and  historical  boundaries  migrate more  easily  west-east  than  south-north.  The  river Rhine,  which  flows  south  -  north  through  West Germany,  is  an  exception.

Im  2:  Great  European  Plain  (gray  spot).

The  Great  European  Plain  is  divided  into  the Northern  Plain  and  the  Eastern  Plain.  The subdivision  is  historical  rather  than geomorphological:  the  portion  of  the  Eastern European  Plain  is  also  known  as  the  Russian  Plain

as  it  covers  almost  all  of  European  Russia.

    8

In  Western  Europe,  the  plain  is  relatively  narrow (mostly  within  320  kilometers  wide)  in  the  northern part  of  Europe,  but  widens  significantly  towards  the eastern  part  in  Western  Russia.

    Im  3:  Charlemagne's  empire  divided.

    Historic  Central  Europe

Central  Europe,  between  Western  Europe  and Eastern  Europe,  has  a  common  historical,  social

    and  cultural  identity.

    9

The  Thirty  Years'  War  between  Catholicism  and Protestantism  was  a  significant  formative  process, although  the  concept  of  Central  Europe  was further  developed  in  the  19th  century.

    Im  4:  Holy  Empire.

Until  the  French  Revolution,  Central  Europe comprised  most  of  the  territories  of  the  Holy  Roman Empire  and  the  two  neighboring  kingdoms  to  the

    east,  Poland  and  Hungary.

    10

Unlike  their  Western  European  counterparts, Central  European  nations  never  had  notable overseas  colonies  due  primarily  to  their  inland location.

Im  5:  Imperialism  before  world  wars.

It  is  argued  that  one  of  the  causes  that contributed  to  both  the  First  and  the  Second  World

War  was  the  lack,  proportional  to  its  population,  of

    11

overseas  colonies  for  Germany,  the  main  political nucleus  in  this  geographical  area.

Im  6:  Political  and  cultural  Central  Europe.

After  World  War  II,  Central  Europe  was  divided by  the  Iron  Curtain  (as  agreed  by  the  Big  Three

at  the  Yalta  Conference  and  Potsdam  Conference)

    12

into  two  parts,  the  Democratic  Western  Bloc  and  the Communist  Eastern  Bloc.

    Im  7:  The  Cold  War.

The  Berlin  Wall  was  one  of  the  most  visible symbols  of  these  artificial  and  forced  divisions. Specifically,  Stalin  had  advocated  the  creation  of  a

Soviet  sphere  of  influence  in  Central  and  Eastern

    13

Europe,  starting  with  Poland,  in  order  to  provide  the Soviet  Union  with  a  geopolitical  buffer  zone between  itself  and  the  western  democratic  world.

    STRATEGICAL  ANALYSIS The  Cold  War

    Im  8:  Allied  organizational  structure.

It  was  a  period  of  geopolitical  tension  between the  United  States  and  the  Soviet  Union  and  their respective  allies,  the  Capitalist  Bloc  and  the Communist  Bloc,  that  began  after  World  War  II. Historians  do  not  fully  agree  on  its  starting  and ending  points,  but  it  is  generally  considered  to  span from  the  Truman  doctrine  of  March  12,  1947,  to the  dissolution  of  the  Soviet  Union  on  December  26,

    1991.

    14

The  term  cold  war  is  used  because  there  were no  large-scale  battles  directly  between  the  two superpowers,  but  each  supported  major  regional conflicts  known  as  proxy  wars.

The  war  was  based  on  the  ideological  and geopolitical  struggle  for  the  global  influence  of  these two  superpowers,  after  their  temporary  alliance  and victory  against  Nazi  Germany  in  1945.

In  addition  to  nuclear  arsenal  development  and conventional  military  deployment,  the  struggle  for dominance  was  expressed  through  indirect  means such  as  psychological  warfare  with  propaganda campaigns,  espionage,  economic  embargoes, rivalry  at  sporting  events,  and  technological competitions  such  as  the  Space  Race.

    North  Atlantic  Treaty  Organization  (OTAN)

It  is  an  intergovernmental  military  alliance between  28  European  countries  and  2  North American  countries.  Established  after  World  War
