PREFACE

The Bible is the most sold book, the most translated book, the most referenced book, the most used book, and the book from which many constitutions and laws of lands are derived. For such a book, there ought to be a proper understanding of it so that it may be positively effectual in our lives.

As believers in Jesus, we believe the Bible contains the word of God; hence, we pour ourselves into this Book with the intent of reading and studying the word of God. The benefits of knowing the word of God are enormous, and very few believers can say they don’t know much about its benefits. Among these benefits are: it is the seed needed for transformation, it is knowing the heart and the will of the Father, it is the potential power, to learn wisdom, understanding, knowledge, and many more.

I have been usually asked by amazing and precious believers what I think was that single secret to understanding the Bible. Like them, I have been asking the Lord what the secret was. I could give many hints that will aid one in understanding the Bible, but a single key? Until one day, a friend of mine and I visited a dear family. While chatting about the wonderful things God has done and is doing, our host asked the same question again. And I suddenly found myself revealing the secret I have long searched for. ‘In my little walk with God and studying of the scriptures,’ I said, ‘I have discovered one of the most important requirements or secrets to understanding the Bible is attention. If you can pay attention to the Bible, it will pay attention to you!’.

As easy as this is, only a few pay attention. I love how Andrew Wommack puts it: Some people are too poor they can’t even pay attention.

This truth was revealed by Christ Himself in Mark 4:24-25:

Then he added, Pay close attention to what you hear. The closer you listen, the more understanding you will be given—and you will receive even more. To those who listen to my teaching, more understanding will be given. But for those who are not listening, even what little understanding they have will be taken away from them. NLT

And He said to them, Be careful what you hear. The measure [of thought and study] you give [to the truth you hear] will be the measure [of virtue and knowledge] that comes back to you—and more [besides] will be given to you who hear. For to him who has will more be given; and from him who has nothing, even what he has will be taken away [by force], AMP

He went on to say, Pay attention to what you are listening to! Knowledge will be measured out to you by the measure of attention you give. This is the way knowledge increases. Those who understand these mysteries will be given more knowledge. However, some people don’t understand these mysteries. Even what they understand will be taken away from them. GW

To partake of the wisdom of God in His word, we must have a certain disposition towards the word, paying the necessary attention. These dispositions are highly valued, earnestly desired, and diligently sought after His word.

In this book, we aim to assist you in paying the necessary attention to your study of the Bible so you can gain a deeper understanding. Many materials on understanding the Bible typically focus on the methodology of reading and understanding the Bible while neglecting the heart one ought to bring to the place of study and other contributing factors to our understanding of the Bible.

Some of these materials are written by high-class theologians, making them difficult for the average person to understand. However, this material is written for the understanding of all, as has been the mandate from the first time the pen was taken to strike a line on the pages.

You will also be enlightened on the neglected spiritual dimension of understanding the Bible. Some believe understanding the Bible is solely a byproduct of hard study, while others believe it's only through spiritual enlightenment. Both perspectives have merit but are incomplete. In this material, heart posture, reading methodology, understanding through the working of grace, and the sovereignty of God in our understanding of the Bible will be considered and taught using scriptures to provide proper instruction.

I believe that after reading this material, you will not only gain a better understanding of the Bible but also learn to rightly divide the word of truth, thus becoming a faithful custodian of the Truth of God’s word.
