was in a crowded subway car, finally headed home at the end of the week.

He scowled at the text on his phone. His ears suddenly felt hot. He glanced to either side; most of the other commuters were engrossed in their own phones. No-one was paying any attention to him.

The Morbo language app's mascot, a cartoon red owl with devil horns, flapped its wings and hooted softly, but impatiently, in his earbuds.

He dragged his eyes back to the screen.

The owl repeated the sentence, more slowly, which meant Karl's score had already dropped. And therefore, the consequences would be worse. Mia macht eine party, aber ich muss im Bett bleiben.

Under the text were little bubbles with words that could translate the phrase, all jumbled up and mixed with extra words.

Karl stabbed each word-bubble in turn, and they slid smoothly over their German counterparts to complete the translation. Mia is having a party, but I have to stay in bed.

Karl looked at the remaining words he hadn't chosen for a second, because by now he knew they'd be a clue as to what Morbo had in store for them. Mit mindestens drei großen Männern.
