When I glanced at the clock on my computer, it was 6:30. Hannah’s plane to Cancun should be in the air by now. I hoped she had a good time, but at the same time it was strange not to be going home to her. She’d become a fixture in my life in such a very short time, and it was hard to tell who was going to miss her the most—me, Joshua, or Cody.

My mind wandered to her beautiful friend, Chloe, who’d taken over babysitting duties. She was a knockout, elegant and graceful, although she’d only worn jeans and a t-shirt when I’d met her. No, she was just the kind of girl who’d look like a royal princess whether dressed to the nines or wearing burlap. She was more slender than Hannah, with masses of reddish-brown curls that hung past her shoulder blades, warm green-gold eyes, and pale skin with a slight dusting of freckles across her perfect nose.

Based on her looks, I would have expected her to be cool, maybe even a little aloof, but she had a quick smile that made her eyes sparkle, and Joshua had taken to her right away. She’d definitely been nice enough, if not as... exuberant as Hannah.

They’d grown up together and been close since elementary school, even though Chloe was two years older and had just finished her senior year of college. I’d been reluctant to accept her as a substitute at first, but Hannah had vouched for her, and she’d brought a list of stellar references from her previous babysitting clients. So now she was at home with my infant son, handling all of the things that Hannah had been doing.

Well, almost all. Had Hannah told her about us? No, surely not. I couldn’t imagine a girl like Chloe taking a job for some old guy she knew was having sex with her eighteen year old friend. It would be too creepy. She’d be much more likely to try her hardest to get Hannah away from me, instead.

Before she’d gone home last night, Hannah had teased me about not wanting her to come back after having Chloe babysit. That was ridiculous, of course, and I’d done my best to convince her I’d be happy for her to keep babysitting for the next fifty years or so. She’d seemed happy enough when she left, so I hoped she wouldn’t spend her trip worrying.

I pushed away a stack of printouts with a sigh. Chloe was doing us—me—a favor taking over Hannah’s job, so the least I could do was get home at a reasonable time. The work would still be here tomorrow, after all. I locked my computer and grabbed my coat. No matter how lovely and nice Chloe might be, as I headed for the car I couldn’t help wishing that it was Hannah I was going home to instead.

It wasn’t quite eight o’clock when I pulled up in my driveway. For once, traffic had cooperated and let me get home without any wrecks or serious bottlenecks.

Chloe, it’s me, I called out as I came through the front door.

I met her in the hallway. She held Joshua in the crook of her arm and offered me a bright, welcoming smile.
