CHAPTER ONE
Marcus woke to an unpleasant chill against the walls of his nose. It was about three a.m., and it was quiet and still but for the crickets. He had slept slouched, reading a book, and had forgotten to close the window. His eyes felt dry, and he pressed hard against them before finally pulling himself out of bed to shut the window. He was still exhausted and sleepy, yet he could not fall back asleep, so with his eyes tightly shut, Marcus imagined what the day might be like when he got up in few hours.
His mind settled upon the image of Gina Hardaway, and he could not deny that a broad smile took root on his lips. It felt awkward but somehow good. They had only been introduced recently, yet he already felt so dearly for her. He'd thought about her the previous day during every waking hour. He could not tell, but he knew something was happening to him.
Still, there was the stealth feeling of sombreness somewhere in his mind. Maybe it was because he had become self-conscious of the fact that he was alone of late. Marcus felt a faint surge of sadness, but it was without reason.
Slowly, as he meditated and drifted into a light sleep, Gina's image was what he saw. It made sense, seeing as how he had been thinking long and hard about her as he'd waited to fall asleep.
In his dream, she did not come to him as a young person. She was dressed in old clothes and was at his home in Sioux Falls. Maybe, if he thought long and hard about it, he would discover they were Patricia’s home clothes, of which she was most fond while growing up. She was a sweet lady in his dream, sitting on a rocking chair, and she made him sit on her lap as though he were a child. He did this, and she cuddled him as she rocked her chair.
Marcus, darling. Never let the bigger boys push you around,
she said in the dream as they bonded.
Tears broke through his closed eyes as he slept. His mom had said those words to him as a toddler, and it was the only sanitary memory he had of her from that time.
He heard a buzz as if from a fly. Gina lifted one of her hands
