    Euro Chronicles - Fouad Sabry

    Chapter 1: Harold James (historian)

Harold James (born January 19, 1956 in Bedford, United Kingdom) is an economic historian who specializes in the economic history of Germany and Europe. He is a Professor of History in the Princeton School of Public and International Affairs at Princeton University. Currently, he publishes monthly columns on economic history for Project Syndicate. Additionally, he is a senior fellow at the Center for International Governance Innovation.

Harold James was born in the United Kingdom and raised there. He attended Cambridge's The Perse School. He got his bachelor's degree in 1978 from Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge, and his doctorate in 1982 from Peterhouse, Cambridge. He was awarded the Ellen MacArthur Prize for Economic History at Cambridge University. He was a Fellow of Peterhouse, Cambridge, from 1978 until 1986. In 1986, he began lecturing at Princeton University. In 2004, the Helmut Schmidt Prize in Economic History was granted to him by the German Historical Institute in Washington, D.C. James was awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of Lucerne in 2013. He is on the editorial board of World Politics and is the chairman of eabh's Academic Council (European Association for Banking and Financial History).

James is married to Marzenna Kowalik (1964 -), a political scientist who teaches at Princeton and specializes on Polish-Soviet economic ties. They have three offspring.

James centered his early career on modern German history, namely German financial history during the interwar period. Among his key contributions to the topic are a comprehensive study of Deutsche Bank, an analysis of the Reichsbank's role in confiscating Jewish financial assets during the Nazi era, and a reevaluation of the particular nature of German national identity. James' explanation of the development of German nationality focuses special emphasis on economic identity, which supplied the incentive for unification in the nineteenth century. In 1992, he was named to the Independent Commission of Experts, which had been established by the Swiss Parliament to investigate Switzerland's refugee policy during World War II and its economic and financial ties with Nazi Germany.

Harold James has written extensively on the economic ramifications of globalisation, noting parallels with earlier attempts at globalisation that culminated in the onset of the Great Depression in 1929. He contends that the Great Depression must be viewed as a worldwide economic catastrophe and not just an American issue. In the perspective of greater economic patterns that were disturbed by the World Wars and the Great Depression, he addresses the modern difficulties related with
