THE BIMBO WHO KNEW TOO MUCH

As soon as the computer results came up, I froze. The simulation turned out even worse than I had feared. Nixie was probably the single worst thing that humankind had discovered. And I was the person responsible.

I could imagine it now. My name would be right next to Thomas Midgley Jr., the man who developed both leaded gasoline and the first CFCs, two of the most harmful discoveries to the environment in the 20th century. Add my name to the list of horrible people in the history of the world, with my discovery coming about 100 years after him.

Jennifer Snow. An innocent-enough name that would forever be linked to a substance far more deadly than anything else that had been produced by the scientific community.

Nixie was just a chemical compound. Technically, anyone with an understanding of chemistry could discover it. The problem was just how deadly it really was. The smallest amount had the potency to kill an elephant. All plants and wildlife, not to mention all humans, would be at risk if this stuff ever got out there.

Worse, there wasn't a way to get rid of Nixie. It was resistant to heat and flame. It didn't degrade. And it was dissolvable in water, using the one thing all life needs to destroy that same life. A little Nixie, the codename that had been randomly selected for the compound, could wipe out a whole ecosystem. If it got in the groundwater, there was no telling just how damaging it could be. And if a few drops ended up in a city's water supply, the whole city would die. Just like that. Completely untraceable.

Nixie was the ultimate weapon and I had discovered it.

My hand started to shake as the weight of everything I had found settled on me. I knew this was bad, but now that I was looking at the simulation results, I saw just how devastating this could be.
