My hypothesis is that they actually used their beaks to bite into the flesh of the enemy, then moved their head in all directions, puncturing and tearing the body of their opponent. The down-facing horn of Einiosaurus has been an example of an attribute that was useless for defense. But if the Einiosaurus bit its opponent, then the down-facing horn would end up being pointed in the right direction. It would work like a can opener for opening the body of its foe. The best proof of this behaviour is, of course, the discovery of another ceratopsian fossil, a Protoceratops, which had been buried by a sandslide just as it was biting the front limb of a Velociraptor.
