    Uh…

Steve very slowly turned on the spot, taking in the surrounding Mobs and all the many, many ways he could die in the next few seconds. He tried to weigh his options very carefully, which was difficult due to all the weapons pointing at him.

I asked you a question, buddy, said the skeleton. Who might you be?

Oh, said Steve. I’m no one. Just…lost my way; saw the lights and, ah, passages, and thought it might be a way out. Didn’t mean to interrupt…

It was hard to read the skeletons’ faces, but Steve didn’t think they were buying it.

Do I know you? asked the second skeleton.

    Oh, I don’t think we’ve met.

Yeah…yeah, you’re one of them who lives in the village, aren’t you?

No, no, said Steve. You must have me confused with someone else.

Right, said the skeleton. "Because there’s so darn many of you running about."

That was true enough; the villagers were certainly not quite the same type of person that he and Alex were. Again Steve found his mind drifting back to the question of why: where had they come from?

But this was not the best time to be wondering about that.

Okay, said Steve, deciding that bluffing wasn’t going to work. So…what happens now?

Most likely, we kill you, said the lead skeleton.

I was afraid of that. Um…just in case you don’t, though…

"Maybe we take you back to Draugr and let him kill you."

    Ah.

Or we might make you dig for us, put in the second one. Assuming you can go a little faster than these zombies.

Oh, sure, said Steve. I can do that.

The lead skeleton glared at his fellow, who shrugged.

What? he said. Might as well.

The other shook his skull, which grated against his vertebrae like shifting stones.

Fine, he said. You, miner: drop that sword.

With no choice, Steve tossed his sword away and the skeleton picked it up.

Hm, this ain’t bad, said the lead skeleton, examining it.

Thanks, said Steve. I made it myself.

"Oh, yeah? That’ll make it ironic when I stab you with it.
