At a peak in 1883 there were 16 hotels in the Herberton district. Only two remain today, the Australian built in 1881 and the Royal built in 1880. Colin Purchase, the former banker and administration manager from Queensland, embarked on a fascinating journey that led him from the world of finance, petroleum, gas and industrial supplies to the heart of Australian history. His early retirement left him seeking purpose, and he found it in the Herberton Mining Centre. As a volunteer, he immersed himself in collections and archives management, honing his research skills.
