    CHAPTER ONE

    Christmas Time is here,

    Happiness and cheer,

    Fun for all,

    The children call their favorite time of year.

    December 20th, 1979.  New York City.

    The Big Apple was snow-white.  There wasn’t a speck of red, or any other color for that matter, to be seen; and Columbus Circle Shopping Mall was a chaotic frenzy of last minute shopper, like yours truly.

    The men outnumbered the women by around a hundred to one. 

    I don’t want to sound like a cantankerous old man at twenty-six, but does anybody say excuse me, anymore?"

    There are days, and this is one of them, when I feel like I’m the only one.

    I was starting to feel like a bumper car and the needle in my patience-o-meter was nearing the red zone.

    Don’t make me angry, my fellow procrastinators.  You wouldn’t like me when I’m angry.

    I had four people to shop for; Alison Hacklyn, she who birthed me.  I wasn’t exactly the Big Apple of her eye.

    I was at a pro-gun meeting the other day and your name came up.  I’ve never seen so many people stick their fingers down their throats at the same time.  You are a constant source of embarrassment to me.

    Well, at least I never had to worry about her speaking poorly about me behind my back.

    Then, there was Ann, my sister, two years older than me a corporate lawyer.  Her husband, Geoff, worked in the same field.  He was a super-nice guy and we got along just fine.  Their daughter, my niece, Gretchen, was four and still loved me.

    That, as it turned out, would last for the extent of her single digit years. 

    Like most real men, I thought that shopping, unless it was for booze,
