The protagonist woke up on a day seemingly like all the rest. He went to the toilet, drank his tea, and made the same breakfast as he always does: two pieces of toast with three scrambled eggs. He was not a particularly happy man, but he could have been called content. With a stable job and a set future, he rarely had any real worries other than some menial and boring tasks which must be completed. For example, on this day he had a letter he had to send. He spent his breakfast looking at the letter at hand, not really pondering much. While stuffing the last piece of egg in his mouth, he realised that this was the first time that he would be sending a letter. Indeed, he had never done the task before. Very interesting, he thought as he put on his coat. He believed that surely there is a system in place, as there is for everything, which will make this task straightforward.
Walking down the street with a pleased look on his face, he waved and greeted many passers-by, who returned the wave. Upon greeting one man, he did not get a greeting back in return, but the man continued starring at him with a psychotic glance as if he were studying the features of his face very closely. He also noticed that the man was not walking in a straight line, as everybody else was; instead, he was veering from side to side very unsteadily. As he turned from him, he could still feel the heat of his gaze on the back of his head. He felt very uneasy at this occurrence, but gave it no mind as he saw the post office and was edging closer to it. Upon entering, after genially greeting the guard, he saw that there was a line
