    CHAPTER 1

    PURPOSE

Ifind the book of Esther very fascinating; it is one that I gravitate towards often and each time I read it there is always a different and much deeper dimension to learn. The story of Esther is almost a rags to riches story. On face value it is the story of an orphan girl who rises to become the queen of a nation, on a deeper level it is the story of redemption and of a GOD who comes through for HIS people when they call upon HIM with sincere hearts.

The story of Esther teaches several key lessons to every believer, two of the major lessons I personally hold dear are that your family background and the circumstances surrounding how you grew up don’t really matter when GOD has an assignment for you. Time and time again GOD has proven that he doesn’t necessarily call the qualified or what people and society deem as acceptable or qualified, but he calls those that people could easily look over or cast aside. In many instances most of the people called by GOD need to completely depend upon GOD to complete the assignment – as they should.

Classic example is Moses, he was a stammerer and so perhaps by human standards he would not have been the first pick on who will go to speak to Pharaoh. Rahab the prostitute was chosen to be in the genealogy of our Lord Jesus despite her colourful past and her background. We therefore see that throughout the pages of the bible when GOD’s grace, favour and spotlight is on you, HE will do wonders with you despite your inabilities or how people perceive you. When HE has favoured you, HE will qualify you.

The second and equally important lesson is that ultimately GOD has a plan and a purpose for your life. You might not understand what that purpose is initially, sometimes as things are playing out in your life you might not understand why they are happening the way they are or how it could ever work out in the end but trust GOD.

The trajectory of your life might appear random, and you might not know how you will fulfil GOD’s purpose in your life, but GOD has a plan! The word of GOD says that HE knows the plans that HE has for us, plans to prosper us, to give us a hope and an expected end. So even if you do not understand what the plan is you can be rest assured that the plan will turn out for your good and much better than anything that you could have ever planned for yourself.

Of late I have also found the office of a watchman quite fascinating. I had heard of prophets, apostles etc but watchmen, not so much. The more I learn about watchmen however the more their importance in families, to a generation, for nations becomes very apparent to me.

In the bible days major cities like Babylon, Jericho and Jerusalem had walls around them. Some sources say some of these city walls were so thick that a chariot could ride on top of the wall!

Even though the city gates could be closed, and the wall provided some level of security, an enemy could use the cover of night or blind spots to climb the city walls and take over the city unawares and so Watchmen were posted on the walls of the city to lookout for the enemy and ensure that the city is alerted if anything untoward was about to happen.

Sometimes the enemy would try to use the element of surprise, and so in the dead of night they would sneak up on the city while men slept and would try to enter the city over the walls, it was therefore the job of the watchman to spot the enemy and blow the horn as an alarm to warn the city that attack was imminent.

It was important at the time, for the watchman to be a person who was diligent, consistent, had sharp hearing and eyesight. Just imagine if the Watchman would feel too lazy to show up to his duty post on the day the enemy comes to invade the city because nothing much had happened the day before, there definitely would be a lot of tears.

Just like watchmen in times past looked out for enemies in physical cities, in the kingdom of GOD, watchmen can be prophets, intercessors apostles etc who hear GOD’s word and are responsible for ensuring that a generation of sleeping or slumbering children of GOD are awakened to the activities of the enemy or to an imminent attack. Just as it was important to have diligent watchmen in times past, it is equally important today that the watchmen show up diligently in their place of prayer to keep watch and hear what the spirit of GOD is saying to the church.

Not only is it important that the watchmen are diligent, but they also need to have seeing eyes and hearing ears. For if watchmen do not have hearing ears and seeing eyes, how can they warn a generation of believers of what is to come when they themselves cannot see it.

It is possible to have physical ears and not hear physical things, similarly it is possible to still hold a position in the church etc but have
