    Dedication

This book is dedicated to Doctor Jose Borromeo, MD, with his entire surgical team for the lifesaving work they did at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines, IA. Also, we want to dedicate this writing to Doctor Phillip Sundquist at Lucas County Health Center in Chariton, IA, and his team of EMTs and ER staff.

    Acknowledgments

I am especially grateful to all the Bible study participants who faithfully attended my classes and encouraged me to keep digging deeper into the Word. The idea of trusting God in every area of our lives is not an easy concept, and yet, their questions have helped me to trust God more as well.

I am also grateful for the pastors who chose me to substitute for them while they had to be somewhere else on Sunday mornings. It took a lot of trust to allow a substitute to fill their beloved pulpits. Praying with the lost was my greatest privilege and I look forward to seeing these brothers and sisters in heaven.

There are so many wonderful friends who have encouraged my preaching, teaching, and writing. A special thank you to Hugh and Betty Hoger, Lori Steuben, Joyce Klien, Rich and ‘Em Magnuson, and Andrea and Grant Serna for reading this manuscript and making suggestions and giving encouragement.

A heartfelt thank you to Trilogy Publishing for their work on my manuscript, Choose to Trust God.

As I’ve said in this Bible study, it is truly God who gets ALL the glory. He saved my husband from an early death and continues to lead us where He wants us to go. Thank you, Lord.

    We will trust You.

    Chapter One: Introduction

    Confidence in God

But the salvation of the righteous is from the Lord; He is their strength in the time of trouble. And the Lord shall help them and deliver them; He shall deliver them from the wicked, and save them, because they trust in Him.

    Psalm 37:39-40

Without a doubt, the worst day of our married lives was October 12, 2020. I don’t know what was worse: for my husband to be in so much pain I had to call 911 or for me to watch his emergency from the sidelines. As the EMTs prepared him for the helicopter race from Chariton, IA, to Des Moines, the head surgeon told the team to give me time to say goodbye. I did not like how that sounded at all. The phrase from our wedding vows forty-seven years earlier hit me. Till death do us part.

The local provider didn’t think Mercy Hospital would let me in, so I took their advice and went home. It was very lonely, even though I did have my dog to entertain me. That kept me from thinking too much about the whole situation. Finally, after about an hour, Doctor Borromeo, the head vascular surgeon, called with questions. (Could they give him blood? Did he have any other conditions? etc.) Finally, the doctor said, I don’t want you to get your hopes up. He’s in bad shape. You would be better off planning for his funeral than praying for his recovery. It hit me again. Till death do us part.

I asked if I could pray for
