Our Relationship with Change: Renée M. Beavers
I am Renée M. Beavers, a fifty-two-year-old woman, whose hometown is Detroit, Michigan. Gilbert (Gil), my husband, and I are a retired Air Force family who has lived in thirteen cities in the U.S. and overseas. Due to our travels, I had to turn my back from the mundane and what made me comfortable to embrace the unfamiliar to grow. I had to become comfortable with being uncomfortable. I have experienced different cultures, traditions, and people in my lifetime.
I loved growing up in a big city. I have lived in small towns as well. While living in a big city can make you open to new ideas and cultures, I love the closeness I observed in small towns the traditions and lifelong relationships. However, living in a small town can make you closed-minded to new people and experiences. There must be a balance between remaining open to change while maintaining a commitment to your core values and healthy relationships. Living our lives with grace for differences makes us kind and ensures we will continue to improve and mature.
I am choosing to give myself permission to live well and overcome vitiligo, celiac disease, and osteoarthritis. Making food my medicine was my bravest moment. Pain, sickness, and an adverse medical condition can get our attention, unlike anything else. I gave up my twenty-eight-year career as a Salon Owner & Hair Care Professional to become an author, speaker, and food evangelist. Living daily with food as a medicine and not a prescription drug was my wisest decision. My commitment to change my life has positioned me to lead others on a journey of learning the power of food as medicine. This choice has taught me that life is a journey, not a destination or an event. We are growing and changing becoming the person God created us to become, one decision, and sometimes, one career at a time.
Being a woman has held me back because I am called into a man’s world.
