Introduction
I say to you it is a great honor to be the vessel that GOD has used to bring you this book, Characteristics of Love. It is my hope and prayers that GOD will use it to bless you with, just as much as it blessed me to write it. It is also my hope and prayers that you will find something somewhere in this book, that will be an encouragement to you and that the knowledge GOD has revealed to us in this book will help you somewhere along the way in your Christian journey. When we are born into the family of GOD, HE begins to instill HIS very own characteristics in each and every one of us.
I pray that as you read this book and learn from it that GOD will bless you and impart to you many blessings and the unfailing force of the Characteristics of Love.
Chapter one
The Divine Example of Love
1st JOHN 4:8
He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love.
As we examine the first Characteristic of Love, the Divine example of love, we need to take note of what we discover. Because our studies will show that we are indeed supposed to follow that example that GOD has set for us in the Bible.
You see, the word Christian means to be Christ-like. So to be Christ-like is to be GOD-like.
Look at MATTHEW 1:23, it says:
v. 23, Behold, a Virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a Son, and they shall call his name
Emmanuel, which being interpreted, is, God with us
.
One of the names the Word of GOD gives Jesus is Emmanuel and the Word of GOD also translates the meaning of that name, (GOD with us) is what it means. So, my dear Christian friend, if the word Christian means to be Christ-like and the Word of GOD specifically says that Christ is GOD
, with us, and that we are to be like him. Then it is very GOD inspiring and Biblical to say that we as Christians are to be GOD-like
.
Let's look at a divine example of love in action. Remember now, we are to follow these examples in our everyday lives. Jesus Himself says so in this passage we are about to look at.
Look at JOHN 13:1-17, it says:
v. 1, Now before the feast of the Passover, when Jesus knew that his hour was come, that he should depart out of this world unto the Father, having loved his own which were in the world, he loved them unto the end.
v. 2, And Supper being ended, the devil having now put into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, to betray him;
v. 3, Jesus knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he was come from God, and went to God;
v. 4, He riseth from supper, and laid aside his garments; and took a towel, and girded himself.
v. 5, After that he poureth water into a bason, and began to wash the disciples feet, and to wipe them with the towel wherewith he was girded.
v. 6, Then cometh he to Simon Peter: and Peter saith unto him, Lord, dost thou wash my feet?
v. 7, Jesus answered and said unto him, what I do thou knowest not now; but thou shalt know hereafter.
v. 8, Peter saith unto him, Thou shalt never wash my feet. Jesus answered him, If I wash thee not, thou hast no part with me.
v. 9, Simon Peter saith unto him, Lord, not my feet only, but, also my hands and my head.
v. 10, Jesus saith to him, He that is washed needeth not save to wash his feet, but is clean every whit: and ye are clean, but not all.
v. 11, For he knew who should betray him; therefore said he, ye are not all clean.
v. 12, So after he had washed their feet, and had taken his garments, and was set down again, he said unto them, know ye not what I have done to you?
v. 13, Ye call me master and Lord: and ye say well; for so I am.
v. 14, If I then, your Lord and Master, have washed your feet; ye also ought to wash one another's feet.
v. 15, For I have given you an example, that ye should do as I have done to you.
v. 16, Verily, verily, I say unto you, The servant is not greater than his Lord; neither he that is sent greater than he that sent him.
v. 17, If ye know these things, happy are ye if ye do them.
Dear Christian friend, this passage may indeed
