      My fingernails were broken, my fingertips bleeding from scrabbling against rock as I climbed the cliff. If I could just make it to the top before the guards caught me and dragged me back to the temple, I might have a chance!

      I’d been chosen by The Crone of the Gods to be a sacrificial lamb. It was an honor I didn’t want and would deny with the last breath in my body.

      While our whole Oasis celebrated my impending death, I ran for my life. I might be the Chosen of the Gods, but I had no intention of dying at seventeen.

      I’d always known I was different. The Matriarch of our Oasis singled me out as God-Touched before my fifth birthday. My mother accepted the decree to present me to The Crone of the Gods on my natal day with quiet dignity, as was expected of a mother of our tribe. If it broke her heart to give me up, I never knew it.

      I only knew that on my fifth birthday I was bathed by my favorite aunt, dried and perfumed by my eldest sister, and dressed in my finest garb
