EMBRACE SELF-DISCIPLINE: THE ART OF BEING STRICT WITH YOURSELF
In 2020, during a networking dinner, a friend introduced me as someone who was very strict with my diet. At first, I was taken aback by the label, as I didn’t see my choices as deprivation but rather self-love through healthy eating. This encounter made me reflect on Marcus Aurelius’s quote: Be tolerant with others and strict with yourself.
I questioned the true meaning of being strict and its connection to self-discipline.
After careful contemplation, I realized that Marcus Aurelius was emphasizing self-discipline. Being strict with yourself means adhering to your chosen rules or beliefs with strong willpower. It is an act of loving yourself and wanting improvement. The challenge arises when people mistake self-discipline for denying themselves, leading to struggles with willpower.
Our bodies respond to stress with physiological changes driven by hormones like adrenaline and cortisol. In response to stress, people may adopt coping mechanisms, like overeating or smoking, for temporary relief. These habits become defaults but are ultimately destructive.
Being strict with yourself isn’t merely about denying old habits; it’s about resolving underlying issues and finding healthier alternatives to cope with stress. This quiets the stress response, allowing better control over impulses and improved cognitive functions.
Research shows that high stress leads to low dopamine levels, increasing impulsivity. Conversely, when stress is managed effectively, executive brain functions like planning, problem-solving, and resisting temptation become more accessible.
The key to self-discipline is rooted in self-love, committing to new habits that promote personal growth and goal achievement. It’s a positive effort, not a negative denial. To embrace self-discipline, one must focus on self-improvement and create healthy habits that align with their desired goals.
EMBRACING SELF-DISCIPLINE: A GUIDE TO STRENGTHENING YOUR MIND
To build resilience and mental fortitude, it is essential to have clear goals that motivate you to resist instant gratification. Prioritize tasks based on how they align with your long-term aspirations. By doing so, you can control impulsive responses and stay focused on achieving greater rewards in the future.
In the face of adversity, it is common to feel powerless and anxious, as if life is happening to you. To combat this, shift your mindset and become an agent in your life. Take control of your stress response, tap into your inner drive, and motivate yourself to take action. Remember, you have the power to navigate
