    Chapter 1

In a faraway kingdom hidden from mortals’ eyes, there was a Serpentine kingdom, ruled by the king and queen of snake people. They lived in a grand castle with their baby boy.

The Serpents, the snake people with forest green eyes, loved their rulers and respected them.

My dear queen, our kingdom is growing more prosperous daily, said King Serpentino, whose shimmering scales glistened in the light, adorning his muscular frame and giving him an otherworldly presence. He was a tall, imposing figure with a regal bearing. He’d piercing green eyes, a sharp jawline, and a well-groomed beard that added to his charismatic demeanor. Besides, his subjects adored him for his kindness and wisdom, despite his intimidating appearance.

Yes, my love, it’s all thanks to our hard work and the loyalty of our subjects, agreed Queen Seraphina. She was a stunning figure, with long, flowing hair that was as black as the night sky. Her skin was smooth, and her eyes were a deep shade of emerald. Queen Seraphina’s powerful magical eyes had the ability to turn every living creature into stone with one look and then into specks of dust with two. She carried herself with grace and poise, and her warm smile could light up a room.

But little did they know someone wasn’t happy with their rule. The king’s one-eyed younger brother, Vipero, was envious of his brother’s power and position. He was the complete opposite of the king and queen. He was short and thin, with a greasy complexion and a sly grin that never seemed to leave his face. His beady eye darted back and forth, always looking for an opportunity to cause trouble. Despite his sinister appearance, he was known to be surprisingly cunning and charismatic, and many had fallen under his spell.

One night, Vipero started a revolution. He incited the people to rise against the king and queen. The kingdom was in chaos as the people took up arms against each other.

What’s happening, my love? asked Serpentino. Why are the snake people turning against us?

It must be your brother, replied Seraphina. He has always been envious of your power and position.

We must act quickly to stop this rebellion before it’s too late.

Serpentino gathered his army and confronted the evil brother, but the evil brother’s forces outnumbered them. Vipero had gathered a large army and had taken control of the castle.

Vipero ordered his men, Overthrow the royal family and take the throne for ourselves, and he whispered, for myself, you fools. And he vanished into the courtyard, killing the loyal Serpents, men and women alike, and absorbing all their spirits into his open-wide mouth while his men fought against the valiant king and his army.

The young Serpents, who witnessed the abomination, scurried with horror in their eyes as they fled for their lives, and their fears drove Vipero crazy. His snakes behind him etched their bodies longer, catching and slaughtering the Serpents’ fragile bodies with their razor-sharp fangs and bringing them to their equally diabolical master, and the vile Vipero sipped their blood.

A sadistic smile seared across Vipero’s face. Tastes like wine.

Meanwhile, the messenger neared the king and reported to him about what happened in the courtyard.

We must fight him even if it costs our lives, King Serpentino cried, his eyes aflame with anger and courage. Vipero is mine. He must pay for the lives of the children he murdered.

My king, the commanding general said with a quick bow. I know you’re powerful, but the enemy wields a dark magic so powerful to handle.

Is that so? King Serpentino asked with a smirk curving on his lips. Let’s test his powers.

Out of the dark, ominous cloud, Vipero appeared with a sadistic grin.

Looking for me, brother? Vipero asked, his eye blazing with magical red lights. Don’t worry, I’ll make your death as painless as possible. And he let out a boisterous laugh, so loud and menacing that even a pit of humongous snakes hovering over him flinched.

Same here, traitor, King Serpentino hissed, unfazed by the imminent danger. You’re the biggest mistake of our Queen Mother and—

Not me, but you, Vipero cut him off with a thunderous voice. You’re becoming weaker as the years go by, allowing the Dustblood to come nearer to our territory and use up our resources. But tonight is the last night of your madness. Suffer the wrath of a betrayed brother. Vipero snapped his fingers, and the snakes above him attacked the king.

King Serpentino used his blazing sword to cut off the heads of the snakes with the commanding general beside him, drawing his sword too. However, every time they cut the heads off, three more grew.

Vipero guffawed. While the snakes attacked the king and the general, Vipero released deadly lights from his magical eye and directed them against the king.

The king released powers from his shimmering scales and counter-attacked Vipero’s powers while electrocuting the snakes to death. But he struggled to fight against the monstrous snakes that came back to life after electrocution and Vipero’s blitzkrieg. Eventually, his powers weakened.

My king, the commanding general bawled, seeing the king bend his knees. Now is the time to escape and save yourself and the royal family. Seek help from Babaylan.

The king nodded with hesitation. But what about you?

Bromance? Vipero horned in, snickering. King Serpentino and
