Dear Reader
Writing science fiction is an exhilarating journey where creativity thrives, and possibilities are endless. Whether you’re a seasoned voyager charting the stars or a beginning adventurer setting out on your maiden voyage, I invite you to join me on this exhilarating expedition into worlds we know and worlds yet unexplored.
Within these pages lies a roadmap—a culmination of lessons learned, and insights gained during my journey through the worlds of science fiction. During my time in my MFA program at Goddard College, I honed my craft and discovered the power of storytelling in shaping our understanding of the world around us.
I didn’t just study the craft of writing—I immersed myself in it. The seeds of my science fiction trilogy, The Divantinum Project, took root there. I’m excited to share that TDP Book 1: Wastling will be out later this year.
Crafting those stories wasn’t just a creative endeavor; it was a journey of discovery, a process of honing my abilities and finding my voice within the genre.
As my trilogy took shape, I explored ideas that go to the deepest trenches of our science fiction worlds. And it was this immersion that ultimately led to the creation of this book. I hope the ideas here help you as much as they have helped me.
From the workshops I gave at Goddard and later to Romance Writers of America groups to the pages of this very book, I’ve sought to distill the essence of what I’ve learned into practical guidance and actionable advice. This isn’t just theory or speculation; it’s the culmination of years of hands-on experience forged in the crucible of my writing journey.
So, as you explore your own path through the science fiction genre, know that you’re not alone. Within these pages, you’ll find the tools and techniques you need to unleash your creativity and craft compelling stories that transport readers to new worlds and push the boundaries of the imagination.
Best,
Darlene Reilley

Part I: Diversifying Your Science Fiction
Chapter 1: Embracing Diversity in Science Fiction and Science Fiction Romance Writing
Hey there, fellow writers! I’m excited you’ve chosen to join me on this cosmic journey into the universe of science fiction and romance. Get ready to embark on an adventure of epic proportions as we explore the infinite possibilities of this universe and beyond.
First off, let’s talk about diversity. It’s not just a buzzword; it’s the heartbeat of our storytelling. As writers, we have the power to shape worlds and populate them with characters who reflect the rich tapestry of humanity and beyond. So, let’s answer the call of diversity and explore the vast expanse of the galactic realm.
What drives us to write science fiction and science fiction romance?
For me, it’s the thirst for the unknown, the uncharted territories waiting to be explored. Our readers crave novel words, new worlds, and new cultures. They hunger for stories that transport them to distant galaxies and ignite their imaginations. And it’s our job as writers to quench that thirst and feed their hunger for adventure.
Infinite diversity – that’s our mantra. We’re not just talking about diversity of people and beings; we’re also diving into the diversity of thought. From the far reaches of space to the inner workings of the human mind, there are endless possibilities waiting to be explored. So, let’s embrace the idea of diversity in all its forms and unlock the potential of our storytelling.
When it comes to diversity in sci-fi, we’re breaking free from the constraints of the human/alien paradigm. It’s time to think beyond the familiar tropes and cliches and forge new paths in our storytelling. We’re flipping the script and redefining what it means to be diverse in the vast cosmos.
Before we blast off into the great unknown, let me introduce myself. I’m Darlene Reilley, also known as Brianna Flannigan in some circles. I’ve traversed galaxies of science fiction and romance, armed with degrees in anthropology, creative writing, journalism, religion, and a fierce passion for storytelling. I’m a lifetime lover of science fiction. I’m an indie author and teacher. Since 2009, I’ve run DarWrites, a website dedicated to helping writers’ level up their craft.
But enough about me. This journey is about you and your boundless creativity.
So, grab your favorite writing instrument, strap in, and get ready to embark on the adventure of a lifetime. Together, we’re going to explore new worlds, craft unforgettable characters, and push the boundaries of our imaginations.
So, fellow adventurers, are you
