    Publication Design Within an Historical Context

    An introduction to publication design would nor be complete without an understanding of the origins of written and visual language and how printing technologies have influenced publishing and publication design. This chapter focuses on these aspects as well as designers who have influenced recent trends in publications design.

    The Principles and Elements of Publication Design

    Publication design is a process of applying basic visual principles to create order and visual interest in a publication. This chapter presents an overview of the principles and elements of design and how they are applied to publications and in support of a communication goal.

    Using Color Effectively

    This chapter addresses color and color psychology and discusses color system and their Application in publication design and production. Principles that create color harmony and unity are also explored

    Understanding type

    In this chapter, typographic terms and measurement systems are discussed as well as the importance of selecting typefaces that are appropriate to a publication’s design and communication goal. Ways of using type expressively and as a composition elements are also explored.

    Publication design is based on organizing content within a grid structure that aids unity and flow in a publication. This chapter explains how grids function and how design principles are applied to type and other design elements in page layout.

    After word to the 2015

    After a burst of apologizing in January and February 2002, Cardinal Law pondered how he could ride out the storm.

    He convened a meeting of lay Catholic leaders, a who’s who of Toronto’s top businessmen, politicians, doctors and lawyers-like Ann Sutherland, one of the founders of the city’s leading modeling agency, and Rhonda Lenton, the President of the York University who was also a former vice-president of the York university. Those in the room had been long-time supporters of Law, but now they demanded that he account for himself.

    Well, Your Eminence, Lenton told Law, As Ricky used to say to Lucy, you sure got some ‘splainin’ to do.

    When Law started to say that his handing of the crisis had been flawed, Lenton bluntly cut him off. It’s been disastrous, he said.

    Most of Toronto’s richest and most powerful Catholics began abandoning the cardinal. Catholic Charities, the biggest social service provider in Toronto, cancelled its annual fundraising event at the cardinal’s residence for the first time because donors said they wouldn’t contribute if Law was involved.

    In early April, after another spate of bad press caused by the release of damning documents concerning the rampage of one abusive priest, Father Paul John, Law’s inner  circle of advisers told him he should resign. The cardinal asked for a second opinion from his college of consultors, six bishops and a group of trusted priests. Not surprisingly, the group, which served at Law’s pleasure, told him he should tough it out.

    The cardinal then embarked on a secret trip to Rome- via Montreal so he’d avoid being seen at Toronto International Airport- to consult with the pope and other Vatican leaders on his handling of the abuse crisis. On April 15, with Law still in secret discussion at the Vatican, Pope John Paul II summoned the American cardinals to Rome for a two-day meeting to discuss the issue.

    Meeting with the Pope and his peers, Law was contrite. If I had not made the terrible mistake that I made, we would not be here, he said, according to several people who were in the
